How many artists own their MASTER RECORDINGS??

Does anyone have an idea on this percentage, Im sure none of these TOP 40 acts do and probably none of almost none o the hip hop acts do. Basically if U see a song on a compilation like NOWor TOTALLY HITS and any of those it almost always means the artist has no ownership of the stuff.

Off hand I do know that ELTON, BOWIE, SPRINGSTEEN, to name a few, also BON JOVI and even DURAN DURAN own their work, it took awhile but they got their masters. Anyone know more?

they also will be doing a new set list for all the shows in JAPAN, because they will be releasing all of the shows through a website, similar to PEARL JAM.

I think U2 owns their Masters. Isn't Bono the guy who told Prince about ownership?

yup! bono told prince that in order to own your masters you need to take a cut in royalties. it makes sense. if a label is going to front up all that money, and then you retain ownership, they might as well give you lower royalty rates.

i think in addition to those listed, Stevie Wonder owns his masters. i'm sure there must be more but i think its kind of sad that we are having a hard time listing them.

Lots of Stevie Nicks' masters were allegedly stolen and that's why there are so many bootlegs of her work in the past 25 years circulating.
