Here is a CMJ review of the first Superjoint Ritual album:

SUPERJOINT RITUAL: Use Once And Destroy

If Pantera vocalist Phil Anselmo's other band, the magically bong-licious Down, makes you want to bust out a hookah and watch old video reels of Sabbath, then Superjoint Ritual will make you want to reach for a baseball bat, find the first nü-metal band you can, and administer a beating that would rival the cornfield scene in Casino. Essentially, SJR's debut can be likened to a whole album of hardcore tunes with the abrupt vehemence of "Fucking Hostile." On average, the songs that comprise Use Once And Destroy float around the two-and-a-half minute mark and, during those raw and short musical eruptions, guitarists Jimmy Bower (Eyehategod, Down) and Kevin Bond, bassist Hank Williams III (the grandson of country music legend Hank Williams), and drummer Joe Fazzio (Stressball) support a snarling Phil Anselmo that we haven't heard this pissed off since Far Beyond Driven. Yes, it's that good. For the full pleasantly violent experience, spend some quality time with "It Takes No Guts," "Fuck Your Enemy," "All Of Our Lives Will Get Tired," "Antifaith," "Ozena," "The Alcoholik" and "Everyone Hates Everyone."

Wow, sounds hot. I must admit, usally when someone recomends something to me I don't really acknoledge it. However, as I know your a man of good taste and inteligents I'm going to go out on a limb and pick up a copy. Next time I go to my MVC I'll tell them to hold the next copy for me. I'll let U know what I think once I've got it. Cheers Ice. I really like Pantera so hopefully this will give me a whole new buzz!

See, there's where I have to disagree... I can't dig Pantera at all... I mean not even a little bit. Pantera was a metal band, whereas Superjoint Ritual is a hardcore band in the vein of the old-school bands like Crumbsuckers, the first DRI record, the Melvins and bands of that nature... some Black Flag influences can be heard too. The influences of Superjoint are more punk than anything... Pantera, on the other hand, is pretty much a heavy metal band.

It comes down to tastes though... I have always been a fan of punk and hardcore instead of metal, so my opinion is based out of that.

The new album, "A Lethal Dose of American Hatred," is even more punk/hardcore influenced. biggrin

Right, right... Black Flag were great!

Superjoint Ritual is taking up on all the old hardcore and adding a healthy dose of brutality to it to make a new, super violent version of hardcore... god, how I love it.

You boys should learn to love more, and hate less.

There's enough violence in the world without this. You should accept Jesus into your heart. I can feel Jesus in me right now. Oh, it feels good. nod

Killing Joke, I haven't heard of them since an eternity, A Love Like Blood reminds me of my 80s parties, dancing the arms up in the air with my "new wave" friends time!

cool! Im impressed that at least 2 orgers here 'Honour The Fire'!
Jaz is like family, His Ma was my teacher in elementary school, and we have always been close.
Jaz & youth helped me through college when I studied media and Music tech.
This album may be their last - it's definatley a testing period 2 see what response the album gets.
Jaz is finding more and more success and fulfillment with his classical work now - he's currently Composer In Residence of the Prague Orchestra.

Damn, I didn't know about that. That is very cool! I remember Killing Joke from the early eighties on... for some reason they were mixed in there with JFA, DRI, MDC, Seven Seconds, Angry Samoans and all the others on the skateboard tapes... even though they never were very much a punk rock band. At any rate, I definitely liked them when I was younger and kinda lost touch with the music. I didn't even know that they were still around.

They were legendary... in an underground sort of way. biggrin
