BEYONCE KNOWLES TO HOST 'MEETING MANDELA: A Staying Alive Special'
Nelson Mandela Tackles Controversial World Issues In His First Ever Global Programme to Reach Potential Audience of 2 Billion People.

Beyonce Knowles
(Jul. 1, 2003) LONDON, NEW YORK, and JOHANNESBURG, South Africa /PRNewswire/ -- In honour of Nelson Mandela's 85th birthday, MTV: Music Television, owned by Viacom Inc. announced today that multi-platinum recording artist Beyonce Knowles will host Meeting Mandela: A Staying Alive Special, celebrating the life of the great humanitarian and former President of South Africa. The 60-minute special, which just wrapped production in Johannesburg, found Mr. Mandela tackling several controversial issues facing young people today for the first time ever in a globally televised special, including topics such as HIV/AIDS awareness, the Israeli/Palestinian conflict, and the oppressive military regime in Burma.

Produced in association with the Nelson Mandela Foundation, UNAIDS, the World Bank, the Kaiser Family Foundation & Family Health International's YouthNet, the special marks the 2003 debut of the acclaimed Staying Alive HIV/AIDS awareness campaign and will premiere on MTV and other broadcasters globally from 18th July to a potential audience of more than two billion people. It is being offered rights free to all 3rd party broadcasters worldwide, and many broadcasters have already signed up to air the special including CCTV (China), Doordarshan (India), SABC (South Africa), TV Africa (pan-African network), Network Ten (Australia), ICP (Israel), ERT (Greece), YTR (Yugoslavia), CCN TV6 (Trinidad & Tobago), and Channels 3 & 7 (Guatemala), among others. For the second year in a row, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) will distribute the campaign's programming free via satellite to its 71 member broadcasters in 52 countries in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East.

The special will air in the U.S. on 18th July at 8pm (ET/PT) as part of the network's Emmy Award-winning Fight For Your Rights: Protect Yourself campaign, an ongoing effort to educate and empower young people on their sexual health. Other elements of the campaign -- which focuses on HIV/AIDS, other STDs and unintended pregnancy -- include one of the most comprehensive sexual health Web sites for young people; grassroots events and advocacy opportunities nationwide; and an extensive resource and referral service (1-888-BE SAFE 1) that connects viewers to local STD testing clinics, pregnancy counselling, and a free sexual health guide. "Young people face so many difficult decisions to make in life today," commented Mr. Mandela. "It is important to talk openly about subjects like HIV/AIDS, war, political leadership and religion so that young people can make informed decisions about these issues, and to understand that they have the most vital role to play in helping to shape the future. It has been a pleasure meeting the young people participating in MTV's programme because, ultimately, it is their lives and futures we are all celebrating."

"Nelson Mandela is one of the most important figures in history," said Ms. Knowles, "and I am incredibly excited to host this special on MTV to celebrate his extraordinary life. I hope audiences around the world are touched by the young people who travelled so far to meet with Mr. Mandela to share their incredible stories of hope and compassion."

"Never before has Nelson Mandela engaged in a dialogue of this kind with young people on television, addressing their personal conflicts in the context of his own struggle for the freedom of democratic principles," said Bill Roedy, President, MTV Networks International and Ambassador, UNAIDS. "The raw emotion of the young participants who discussed their personal tragedies as part of world conflicts were matched only by Mr. Mandela's guidance, which enabled them to embrace his messages of tolerance, forgiveness and reconciliation as the only way forward in the struggle for a better future. We are honoured to celebrate Mr. Mandela's 85th birthday with this new MTV special, and we challenge other broadcasters around the world to air this programme rights free to extend the messages of the Staying Alive campaign, including the stigma and discrimination associated with HIV/AIDS, to the widest possible audience."

The following young people were flown to Johannesburg to participate in the special.

Henry Hudson Luyombya from Kampala, Uganda tested positive for HIV two years ago, not too long after his father and brother died of AIDS. Henry has dedicated his life to HIV/AIDS support and prevention work but is losing faith in the struggle. In Henry's world, poverty, sickness and hopelessness seem to prevail.

Min Zin was forced to flee Burma to escape political persecution and lives in exile in Thailand where he continues to fight the oppressive regime that has power in his country. Back home, Min's family faces unrelenting harassment and are often arrested as a result of his status as a freedom fighter. Min has a choice -- denounce his beliefs and turn his back on his struggle for freedom so he may return home and his family may live peacefully, or remain in Thailand and continue fighting for democracy.

Guy Levy's sister Rachel was killed when a Palestinian suicide bomber blew herself up in a crowded market. Jumana Issa Al-Ali's father was killed by Israeli soldiers while he was out running errands one afternoon. Guy and Jumana struggle not only with personal loss, but against the all consuming distrust, fear and vengeance that surrounds them. They are fearful that hate will win.
