IS SADE A POSER? PRE PACKAGED COOL?

I was just listening to "LOVE DELUX" by Sade (DUB MEETS QUIET STORM) one of my favourite albums

although I LOVE sade alot she is a bit of a poser she is ultimately someone placed as the face of an amazing band because they thought "She looks like should sing" still her voice gets me every time and she is one "fabricated image" I am willing to eat up, "She is designer chic, made for the wine bars" Is she really soul?

Matthew from the band said that she was only chosen because she looks like she should sing and looks good as the face of the band I mean don't get me wrong she is one of my favourites but people on here are always talking about how American Idol and so on are just pre packaged
we'll so is she, she was made for yuppies and people who wanted to have a hit a cool, me included

How dare you call Sade a poser! And you should be ashamed of yourself for mentioning her in the same sentence as J-Lo and Ashanti. If my sister (a huge Sade fan) saw this thread, she would give you a good Internet ass-kicking!!

LOL It's just a discussion, like Sade cares what I think
looking all fine as hell at 45, got her millions still cool
But she is ultimately a marketing tool, she is cool by numbers

Good Morning All,

I disargee with this statement GREATLY!!! Helen Folasade Adu is the lead singer of the group Sade. Sade btw, is the name of the group which takes it's name from half of Helen Adu's middle name. That's why you see them get nominated for GROUP performance awards at the Grammies and not FEMALE performance.

Having said that,,,Helen Folasade Adu definitely has her own style and identity. She is sensual and classy unlike your average run-of-the-mill female vocalists now-a-days. More attention should also be given to her as a lyricist and songwriter. She along with her band has a style and formula that is unique and works good for them...walking the thin line between smooth jazz and middle of the road R&B. They're superb live.

And YESSS, at 45, Helen is absolutely gorgeous!!!

I love their music alot. They have made some interesting B-sided tracks as well. With my favorite being "Love Affair With Life {the b-side of "Your Love Is King"}. That song is an underrated Sade masterwork{a pure jazz track to be exact}.Ms.Adu penned some great lyrics on that one.

"You can't play me...I'm not a melody"

I love the musicality they bring collectively as a group to the table.

Speaking of Sade, I just bought DVD compilation of her videos from the years, and man...what a trip back down memory lane! It just reminded me why I love her/them ALL over again! For some reason, "Feel No Pain" has been running through my head like crazy for the past week, especially that bass line.

I'm not pushing the point of her talent's she is an amazing lyricist and great singer (although she is a limited vocalist beautiful voice none the less) but unlike other singers she knows her limits and boundries, she use what she got to the best
My point is of the image and style been a bit "contrived"

p.s It's only a discussion

Yeah Paul Denman is a good bass player who can riff like nobody's business. He also lays down a nice riff on "Mr. Wrong" from the 1985 Promise album.

Love Deluxe is masterful. One of those albums that is gonna be timeless. You'd throw it on 20 years from now and it will still hit hard in a SMMOOTH kind of way.

"Feels No Pain", that's the cut right there.

Since we are all on the Sade tip and no one is taking my bait for "sade the poser" theory

Has anyone hear heard the sweetback project?
This was the guys from Sade (minus ms Adu) I really liked this CD?

Yeah, this was a pretty sweet CD. I dug it a lot, too.

She's a succesful musician. By definition her image is pre-packaged. Goes with the territory. Even the most vocal "real" artists from Neil Young to Mellencamp, to Badu have an image that they perpetuate partly because it sells.

Please check the songwriting AND producing credits before you start grouping Sade and J-Lo together.

There are such things as talented and wonderful musicians making pre-packaged music. Look at Foo Fighters. Dave Grohl is a rock mastermind. He made the first Foo Fighters album by himself, playing all instruments. It might sound like typical pop/rock music, but once you get down to it, Foo Fighters are one of the greatest rock bands of our time.

Sade can be seen the same way even though I think the sound, because of her voice, is truely unique. Sade is wonderful. Great, smooth music to knock boots to.

In the music biz, who's image isn't contrived? As long as the music is good I don't care how they package her or the group.

If she's a poser in your opinion, then that's how you see her. She's worked it and made it clearly her own authentic style, and she's graceful and sophisticated to boot. So it works for her. Now comparing her to these wanna-bes who prance around half nekkid trying to sing, is insulting at best. Sade IS the woman.

Sweetback's release is awesome, I play it constantly especially the etheral-feeling "Gaze." I wish they would work on another one since it may be another 4 or so years before we hear from her again.

I thought this about Erika Badu, but I didn't know the right word for it at the time. So it's poser... Now, I don't want to be flamed. I like Erika's music. But, I don't know...it was something about her look. The headwraps, fake locks, ankh's, bare feet, candle-lighting... This bohemian-type vibe, it just seemed kind of contrived. I'm not saying that she wasn't really feeling that, it just seemed to me that she was going all out to show everyone that she was keepin' it real; like she didn't need to weave horse hair into her head, or wear colored contacts, or have her ass hangin' out to make it in the business. That's all good, but I think we got it.

I could buy that argument if Erykah, or Sade for that matter ever made a song about keepin' it real Unlike, let's say India.Arie she never made a song that was an advertisement for the "bohemian" thing. She could represent fake locks, a bald head, headwraps and moon boots all in the same week but her music is so strong I don't see how it could come across as contrived. Shame on you UptownDeb disbelief

Don't hate Sade becuase she's beautiful. Period! That's really unfair that just becuase she looks and is talented (I'm not a huge Sade fan but really like the stuff I've heard and play "The Best Of" and love it) is no reason to hate!

Only a fucking idiot would question the validity of the talents of Sade. Just because she's PRETTY, she gets questioned? ALL artists are pre-packaged. Prince was too. It doesn't make them less of an artist. The packaging is the work of the LABEL, not the ARTIST. OF COURSE the label took into account that Sade was beautiful. They wanna sell t-shirts and posters as much as they do CDs; if noot more so.
