Forum > Music: Non-Prince

I hate to say it but the Non-Prince forum is starting to dry up. Seems like we are seeing fewer and fewer posts from some long time orgers over the past month. Add to that the fact we are getting fewer and fewer interesting threads and/or replies and it might be time call out the "OGs" on this board. Anyone else notice this or is it just me?

You are right.

Personally, it has become boring because it has been taken over by 90% R&B and soul.

I like Prince because I like all music styles. But threadd here about rock or pop or classical die a death apart from devote-a-thread type responses.

I guess most prince fans here prefer there funk to their rock or pop!

Right now I see threads on: Bowie, Jewel, Debra Harry, The Chillie Peppers, and the Bangles to name a few. We do talk a lot of old school and funk here but saying it's 90% is exaggerating.

You are counting TTD and Madonna amoung the R&B/rap/soul threads? And when is Mistermaxxx's album coming out?

And just for kicks, I checked page two and it seems to be split about 50-50. That is unless you want to count Sesame Street - Pinball Song as hip hop.

I think the problem is so many people here have narrow tastes. I'm not saying (on the record, at least) that this is a bad thing...but it hurts the discussion. Try and start a thread about The Police, and people write "no groove...boring white wannabe reggae blah blah." Try to talk about Radiohead, and retards say, "This is just a bunch of meaningless noise...no grooves or funk..." I tried mentioning Japanese taiko group Kodo, and the response I got was "FUCK OFF!" Literally, that was it. Threads about Bowie get a few responses, and then sink. But you can bet your ass that there will be a new thread about Monica or Beyonce or some other shit like that every day...to many people here, it's gotta be R&B or funk to be worthy of mention...which is fucking ridiculous.

Still, I'll accept the environment here before some shithole like OKPlayer, where people still lie to themselves and pretend that Jay-Z has released several masterpieces, or that Nas is one of the unrecognized masters of our time.

Check this thread out:

I have tried, somewhat successfully, to get the non-Prince non-funk non-R&B discussions going.

The reality is that this is a Prince web site, so I expect a little bias towards a certain kind of music.

It really is ashame when you think about the types of music that has influenced Prince.

It wasn't all soul or all funk. It was a variety from Zeppelin to P-Funk to EWF.

Of course the threads are only a snap shot. But the front page is relevant as its what people are taking about. Thats why they are at the front.

Madonna is dance, and whilst it may be more difficult to categorise, it roots are firmly in soul and not rock.

TTD? Have you listened to his stuff from the last few years? Rock pop it aint! I love his stuff, but again, the roots are firmly planted on the soul.

I'm not knocking the R&B and soul etc, I love a lot of it. I'm simply pointing out that the most popular threads are leaning to one side, Its obvious on the count, even if you take Madonna and TTD out of the equation.

The thread asked why we think its drying up. This is why I think it is. Narrow music tastes. Simple as that!.

By the way, who said the threads had to be about new albums? So Mistermaxx can swivel!

It sucks...no matter what forum (Politics & Religion...Music Non-Prince...etc), you just can't hold a good discussion anymore. Try writing satire? Some dipshit won't understand it. Try discussing other artists, even albums widely recognized as masterpieces? People laugh at you because those artists don't say things like "Eye M 2 Fonky 4 Ur Jammin" or fill their records with sleazy beats so you can ”get your 'fuck on' with your girl..." Try discussing politics in an intelligent manner, and some assbutt fuckcock will come on hootin' and hollerin' at you like some goddamn Frankenstein movie torch-wielding peasant without even reading your post.

Basically, this is total shit lately. It's obviously no fault of the moderators, and I don't mean to move this thread into the "Site Discussion Forum" direction, but people here are fucking doorknobs. I could fill an empty McDonald's bag with moldy four-week-old donkey shit, pour it out on my front steps, and hold a better conversation with it...

That's EXACTLY what is wrong. For a guy who used to be so goddamn eclectic on EVERY album (before he seemingly thought he discovered "new musical directions"...yeah, and Columbus discovered America you one book reading twat), it's pathetic that his fans are such muppets for solely funk and R&B. Go listen to Bambi. That's some fucking rock. Or listen to the song Hallucination Rain. I dig funk as much as the next motherfucker, but this blind allegiance to it makes me want to puke razor blades out of my clenched asshole.

Here's something different...

There's finally a website for Vito Bratta, the bad-ass guitar player from White Lion, who were very popular back in the late '80's, early 90's before Kurt Cobain and the rest of the Seattle cats took over. Though they're now known as one of the "hair bands", they made some pretty catchy songs, even if lead singer Mike Tramp's voice wasn't the greatest. I was a big fan of Vito Bratta - unlike a lot of the "shredders" of the day, he seemed to embrace a more melodic approach to his songs and solos. He could hold his own with anyone, but he never substituted flashiness for melodicism. He was a big fan of Elton John, so maybe that played a part in his songwriting.

Anyway, after White Lion disbanded, Vito quit the music business - I even read that he had stopped playing guitar for a couple of years. He had become like the mythical Sasquatch - plenty of sightings but no hard evidence. He finally gave an interview to a guitar magazine last year. He started playing again, but he injured his hand doing some classical guitar exercises. He was contemplating surgery at the time the interview was conducted.

Lo and behold, there's finally a website where you can go and discuss all things Vito. www.vitobratta.com. It may not be the original Time getting back together, but it's something different than the usual discussions here...

I love this forum. It's a place where we can freely discuss other artists, review albums and concerts, talk about upcoming projects, etc. This forum is what WE make it.Feel free to discuss any artist you like.Don't worry if not too many other Orgers are familiar with that artist,or if they just don't like that particular artist or that type of music.

As for the many, many R&B-themed threads,it's obvious that MOST of the folks who post in this forum are huge fans of R&B.But don't let it bug you. There are many of us who like all types of music (I just started a Sugar Ray thread...a few days ago,I started a Rick James thread). It all balances out.

I listen to a lot of different music types. Primarily R&B. Sorry, but that's was I was raised on and where a lot of current Rock&Roll music came from. I listen all day to an alternative radio station in Chicago which plays Radiohead, who I am really diggin' right now and will be buying the new album, Metallica, Coldplay, Good Charlotte, Queens of the Stone Age, Korn, etc., etc. I don't know enough about any of them to really engage anyone in a conversation about them but I really am trying to branch out more and be more openminded. I am always open to suggestions about new music.

What's sad about this list is the lack of fresh music in the non-R&B category. The only "new" act there is Josh "American Idol wannabe" Grayson. No wonder the rock/pop genre is dying on the vine here. There's obviously more variety in the R&B acts being discussed, perhaps that has something to do with the level of interest here.

I mean how many times can we dig up David Bowie's dried-up carcass and prod it with a stick? stickpoke There's certainly no shortage of current & upcoming talented non-R&B acts. Throw in a few of those once in a while and maybe they'll generate more discussion.
