If you get their box set 'Citizen Steely Dan 1972-1980',you will have their first seven albums all in one place. This 4-CD box set contains all of their recordings, from the first album ('Can't Buy A Thrill',1972) to their 1980 album 'Gaucho. Then,to make your collection complete, just go out and buy their two most recent albums ('Two Against Nature',2000 and the new one 'Everything Must Go').

Unfortunately,no.The box set was released in 1993 and since then, most of the the individual CDs have been re-mastered.Even though I have the box set,I couldn't resist the urge to go out and buy a few of the remastered albums, like 'Aja' (1978) which is the best Steely Dan album of all, imo.

So,my advice for you is to start with 'Aja',you won't be disappointed.

Actually , the box set is remastered ,however that doesn't
necessarily mean that the later releases dont sound better, tho. confuse

Im sorry if my post wasnt clearer. My box set says it was digitally remastered and I havn't bought any of the later releases except the three later albums not included in the box.If DavidEye says that the later remasters are better than I would take his word for it.However if you want to get all of Steely Dan's pre-ressurection 70's lps at a good price ,go for the box.Either way ,I dont think you'll be disapointed.

BTW ,I've read that KB likes Steely Dan too.

OK! Just bought Aja and liking it very much! I was a bit dozy and went into town with less money than I thought I had so I'll be going back at the weekend to buy a few more.

Any recommendations?

As it's been said already, really..

EVERY

Steely Dan album is worth getting; their music is on a

WHOLE OTHER LEVEL.

Yet,
if you "HAD" to have only.. 3 of their disks..

I would recommend

Can't Buy A Thrill

The Royal Scam

Aja

The new album everything must go gets better & better every time I listen to it. It threw me off at 1st, because most of the songs are "up-tempo", even "funky" (by Steely Dan standards)..

everything must go, things i miss the most & green book are clearly my favorite tracks so far, but I'm also digging more slang of ages & lunch with gina..

Yeah, really..
their ENTIRE catalogue is worth having..
don't rush;
take your time to get into each album.
Indeed, it will take certain songs or albums to grow on you, but before you know it, most of them will..

Steely Dan is definitely an "acquired taste"..
but once you acquire it, you'll never lose it.

the sky the moon good food & the weather
first run movies..
I'll see you tonight..
in ALL MY DREAMS..

I will be getting all of their albums. I was just curious as to which were the most obvious choices first. I'll take your picks into consideration. Cheerz.

Hey Cloudbuster, I don't know if it is still up, but I went to their website when the new album came out, and listened to the whole thing, which I thought was really cool on their part. It is classic Steely Dan.

Try 'Gaucho' (1980) and the first album 'Can't Buy A Thrill'(1972).Those are my other favorite Steely Dan albums.

'Aja' is their best work! It's a masterpiece from beginning to end.I'm glad that you got that CD first.I love the last two songs "I Got The News" and the funky "Josie".

I managed to get into town again today and picked up 'Pretzel Logic' and 'The Royal Scam'. They're both good but I particularly like the latter. Unfortunately I didn't have the time to go hunting for 'Gaucho' at another store (it wasn't currently in stock at the shop I went to) so I'll be doing that at a later date.

Ooh, I LOVE Pretzel Logic. Some great songs on that one. For some reason, I have a hard time getting into The Royal Scam after the first three songs or so. It seems like that's one of two SD albums that have a couple of filler tracks on it, IMO.

it's good to see you're getting into The Dan..!

From what you've heard so far on The Royal Scam,
which songs stand out the most? Do you have a favorite?

While I LOVE Pretzel Logic now.. even myself, it took a while before I dug that album other than Rikki Don't Lose That Number (which I'd already heard) & Any Major Dude which took me about 10 seconds to love. My favorite track on Pretzel Logic now is..

Pretzel Logic:

I would love to tour the Southland
In a travelling minstrel show
Yes I'd love to tour the Southland
In a traveling minstrel show
Yes I'm dying to be a star and make them laugh
Sound just like a record on the phonograph
Those days are gone forever
Over a long time ago, oh yeah

I have never met Napoleon
But I plan to find the time
I have never met Napoleon
But I plan to find the time
'Cause he looks so fine upon that hill
They tell me he was lonely, he's lonely still
Those days are gone forever
Over a long time ago, oh yeah

I stepped up on the platform
The man gave me the news
He said, You must be joking son
Where did you get those shoes?
Where did you get those shoes?

Well, I've seen 'em on the TV, the movie show
They say the times are changing but I just don't know
These things are gone forever
Over a long time ago, oh yeah

I especially love the bridge part "I stepped up on the platform.."

Damn.
Those boys are bad!

Keep digging 'em, Cloudbuster!
I'll see you tonight..
in ALL MY DREAMS..

I'm really liking the first four tracks and Haitian Divorce (which is the only track that I was already familiar with and sparked my interest in their back catalogue in the first place!)

But honestly, I don't think that there's a bad song on this album.
