These are my ratings: Can't Buy A Thrill Countdown To Ecstasy Pretzel Logic Katy Lied The Royal Scam Aja Gaucho Two Against Nature Everything Must Go : Dunno, haven't bought it yet... Of course the stars I have given the albums are just a way to compare the albums to eachother, all these albums are way better than most albums of other artists. Steely Dan is in a league of their own... [This message was edited Sun Jul 6 12:57:37 PDT 2003 by funkaholic1972] RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

I liked that song the first time I heard it. You should bop away and not give a damn what anyone thinks.

The solo Album "The Nightfly" is perhaps one of the best albums I've ever enjoyed.
Donald Fagan writes, "The songs on this album represent certain fantasies that might have been entertained by a young man growing up in the remote suburbs of a northeastern city during the late fifties and early sixties, i.e., one of my general height, weight and build."

Good call. The best album Steely Dan never released IMO

origmnd said:[quote]Can anybody make heads or tails as to
the references in their lyrics?? origmnd: there are 2 good resources for getting a clue about Steely Dan lyrics.. I've been a fan for over 17 years, & as MUCH as I know the lyrics by heart, as much as I've "studied" them, there are/were still many things that were way over my head.. try the following: http://home.earthlink.net.../Index.htm it's a site called Fever Dreams, where "culturally knowledgeable" Dan fans give there perpective & interpretation on lyrics of the various albums.. this site is quite interesting, really.. thru this site, for example, I came to know what Chain Lightning was (probably) about- something I could have never figured out on my own, as much as I LOVE that song.. the other site is: http://members.aol.com/da...steelydan/ this is called the steely dan dictionary (LOVE the "seventies-style font"..) & it lists alphabetically certain words & phrases found in Steely Dan songs that "the average person" may be unfamiliar with.. (I of course, knew more than HALF of the terms before I came across this website..) These 2 sites are the best I've seen so far, in terms of "deciphering" these often called "cryptic" (yet nonetheless BRILLIANT) lyrics.. it would be cool to discuss some of the lyrical interpretations in this (or another) thread.. soon it will be too late bobbing for apples can wait.. I'll see you tonight..

this past (4th of July) weekend,
I drove from Nashville to Memphis for a friend's wedding, & you can DAMN WELL KNOW I had my ENTIRE Steely Dan cd collection with me, & let me tell y'all.. Steely Dan music is GREAT for road trips like this! The 2.5 hours seemed like 30 minutes! For me, there are few pleasures better than playing Reeling In The Years at FULL BLAST, cruising on I-40 westbound at 80mph, soaking in the Tennessee countryside.. I'll see you tonight..

I think I may just keep this thread alive forever!
I can't believe I've gone the first 28 years of my life without The Dan in my music collection. You really do have to keep playing their albums over and over to fully appreciate them. I'm particularly fond of The Royal Scam and Aja. What a wonderful discovery. Cheerz folk for all your help, recommendations, comments etc...etc.

After you go thru the whole Steely Dan studio catalog pick up their live cd "Alive In America". They should put out another live cd after this tour - Alive In America is from 1993-1994 tourdates.

Don't be surprised that you find yourself loving their music more & more as you play it! About 4 months ago, I was listening to King Of The World, a song that I've always loved.. listening to this song with my headphones, I heard this 1 little "clavinet embellishment" that I had never heard before in this song, right before the "I'm reading last year's papers" bridge.. I heard that little bit, & I fell in love with the song ALL OVER AGAIN. That's 1 thing about The Dan: they do "the little things" in their songs to make them stand out, & it's always cool to listen to a song that you've played & heard hundreds of times, & hear something you haven't heard before.. yeah, Cloudbuster.. keep on digging The Dan, for they are worthy to be dug. I'm learning how to meditate so far, so good.. I'll see you tonight..
