Not everybody can understand the funk Which is why I believe there is hardly no funk bands 2day. Funk music is just as complexed as any other music. It's rhytm comes from deep inside ya soul, ya dig. I don't blame those cats who don't understand the texture , the feel or the concept of the music. It just wasn't in their system 2 comprehend the message. unlike Jazz or Rock n Roll, Funk comes from a different planet. I'm not sure which planet it comes from, but it's for sure as to hell not in our solar system baby. It's in a universe of it's own. This is why at times it can also be universal . I think that's what makes it soo interesting. It's unlike any other music, you'll hear on the radio. With R&B you know what's already gon happen, it's either a love song, a song about making love or a song about breaking up.
With Rock, you already know what's it gonna b, it's about some kids with problems, or somebody just wanna have fun, With rap you , it's always always about the street and jazz... well let's just say jazz is jazz... mann... Funk on the other hand, is unpredictable, it has no limits. When it comes 2 Funk you never know what your gonna get. Will it be the ever intergalatic facade of aquaboggie, or just the simple groove 2 ahh... the name is bootsy??? U never know, which is the reason why the funk legacy is like that Erykah Badu song. It goes on and on, on and on... So you either in the groove or you ain't, ahem funk ain't 4 everybody, only the sexy people I will 4ever live in the funk baby!! funk 4 yo soul edit [This message was edited Thu Jun 26 15:23:23 PDT 2003 by Mizzunderstood]

Very cool! Nothing in music today makes me shake my head and scrunch up my face from that stuff, that funk, that sweet, that funky stuff! Saadiq has some really true funky moments and a precious few other folks but it ain't nothin' like the 70's with Sly, Bootsy and George.

funk has always been the sound of the underground the feel from the street the vibe from tha sweet soul of da righteous but i disagree, tha one is still thumping to this day it is just harder to hear amongst all this fabricated shit polluting the airwaves. as for funk coming from a different planet, brotha please funk is the child of jazz, the father of rap and the nephew of soul ..

I manage a small guitar store in good 'ol New Jersey. The thing I've noticed is that none of the young people who take music lessons with us have any knowledge of funk music. Neither do the teachers - I've always felt that funk music is a lost art. When I tell customers that I play in a funk band - you can check us out at www.tonos.com/slm7567 - I get blank stares or questions pertaining to how many horns are in the band...
I had to sub for one of the teachers once. I gave a funk lesson to a young bass player. I just played some funk rhythms for him to improvise over. He looked like he had just discovered gold. I also gave him names of some of the greats - the Isleys, Bootsy, Prince...If there were more like him... Oh well Come back, Mint Condition!!! Did Sly have the most wicked mutton chops, or what!? I heard a SFS joint today that I don't think I've ever heard: "Frisky." How did I sleep on this one???
I love the old pix of the Isley Bros. The two brothers on either side of Mr. Bigg--I mean--Ronald Isley, look like the brothers I always wished I had. I mean, they look like they could kick ass.

ahem, u can learn about the history of funk, but if u ain't born with it, u just ain't born with it. No books or Teachers in the world can teach u how 2 groove like these mutha's did. U see Funk music is deep bro ham. If the seed wasn't grained while in the womb, it'll be a difficult journey 2 follow and hard 4 yo mind 2 fully understand the elements. That goes for any music though. Yeah you can be taught, but there is a difference between natural talent and trained musician. ... without getting 2 much away from the topic, I always could hear the difference between the two. A trained musician (which is something I am) studys what they where taught, there's no spice 2 the subtance. but I always dug the natural musicians better, because I could hear the rhytm flow much more gracefully (depening on the individual at hand)however. with a natural talent, it comes 2 them freely them, because it was given and in alot of ways that is how I view Funk music ... The real beauty with funk is that it can infiltrate other musical styles. All of a sudden you stumble across a hard rock song that´s funky like there´s no tomorrow. Or a drum ´n bass song with a bass line that´s so funky you can´t stand still for one second. Funk is a feeling. Funk is joy. Funk is energy. And you always know when you hear it, no matter what musical costume it might be wearing at the time.

To DigitalLisa and anyone else who's not getting the gist of my post - funk is definitely an inherent thing, albeit one that can be taught, i.e., the history, the players, techniques. Trained musician or not (and I am also), my concern is that so many of our young musicians are not AWARE of the funk - they don't know anything about it. That's what I'm talking about. I feel that funk music is worthy of being discussed along with all other types of music. In that respect, funk music CAN be taught. There is a viable history that needs to be made aware to the woefully uninformed. My author page: https://www.amazon.com/au...eretttruth

To put it simply, Mizzunderstood (& I hope you see this), FUNK IS DEAD!!!
The funk is lacking these days cuz no one seems to care. It's either about synthesized hip-hop/R&B or loud distorted rock or plastic pop. I can name you some bands of today that come close to being funky: Radio 4 Los Amigos Invisibles Maroon 5 Dismemberment Plan The Rapture (check these guys out) Soulive Chocolate Genius The Liars Cody ChestnuTT and you have the veterans: Fishbone D'Angelo Red Hot Chili Peppers (but even they've decided to go into different directions) Prince (duh!) Level 42 (yes, they're back!) But funk is'nt around cuz folks don't really take that genre seriously. After all, wasn't just a danceable alternative to Rhythm & Blues? There's just so many other danceable forms of music that have left funk in the dust. Hopefully the funk shall return. And because I'm a very funk-rooted rhythm guitarist, I'd like to be apart of that resurrection. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.
