Classic albums that hardly ever, if even NEVER, get discussed on this site...perhaps due to people's fixation on "funk"

There are so many classic albums that NEVER get mentioned on this site...perhaps it's because people are so strangely fixated on only "funk" and "grooves." Perhaps folks have never bothered to listen to this stuff. Who knows?

Anyway, spread the music here...share classic albums that people should seriously check out...

  • "Tumbleweed Connection" by Elton John
  • "John Wesley Harding" by Bob Dylan
  • "Mezzanine" by Massive Attack
  • "Angel Dust" by Faith No More
  • "Nebraska" by Bruce Springsteen
  • Anything by Kodo
  • "Between the Buttons" by The Rolling Stones
  • "Ghost in the Machine" by The Police

You know,KS,I don't have any albums by Elton John.I just have several Greatest Hits compilations and his box set,but I'd really like to get some of his albums. Is 'Tumbleweed Connection' a good place to start? What other classic Elton albums would you recommend?

Fuck his greatest hits. I'd start with Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. Tumbleweed Connection is VERY different, however. No big hits on it...just classic Western Americana. An absolute classic. You'll either love it or hate it.

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is amazing. I always call it the SOTT of the 70's. lol

The live in Australia album is great because you hear a different approach to his older songs.

Madman Across The Water is great as well. Goodbye may be the saddest ballad ever composed.

Yea, funk aint all there is:

Radiohead, OK Computer--worship How the fuck can an album be this perfect? omfg So beautiful even the devils in the fiery pits grab for hanks of tissue.

The Church, Starfish. Great murky, jangly alternative pop. mix the Doors with Echo And The Bunnymen.
All you others say Hell Yea!! woot!

i hear your point loud & clear. i love FUnk. but i listen to
all types of music, too. dylan's and elton's albums are
pretty good. i haven't heard these 2 in ages. ej's made
more popular albums but my memory of this one( a friend of
mine played me it and dylan's years ago) told me it was
just as good as the more commerical ones that took him to
number 1 consistantly in the mid-late 70's!

nebraska's different than most of bruce's records. i'm not
a big fan of his...but i dig this album.

5 stars to the stones "buttons" & the police's "ghost in the
machine (i gotta pull this one out of the closet and
play it! )

cool thread.

oh before i 4get k-sausage...here's a few clasic ones i
have in my collection...do U remember these:
1.some girls-stones
2.law and order -lindsay buckingham (underrated artist...i
like his solo stuff better than his f-mac stuff)
3.are U experienced & axis as bold as love-jimi (listen to
these and you'll think of prince a lot)
4.band on the run & the russian album-mccartney (macca
rocks his ass off...rootsy shit)
5.catch a fire & exodus-marley (bob's best)
6.fly like a eagle & the steve miller box-set (stevie was
HOT as a motha in the 70's)

Heard of it, yeah. He advertises it on his site as being the "mother" of all albums. I'm personally keeping a closer eye on Martha Wainwright and Teddy Thompson.

Damn right I did. Listen to Tumbleweed Connection; it'll redefine your perception of "Elton John." I'm not talking about The Lion King here. I'm talking about widely-recognized classics. Elton had a STRING of them in the 70s.

See...comments like this, and your one about The Police just being "wannabe White reggae" on the other thread, are just as ridiculous as people who foolishly say, "Prince?!? That loser hasn't had a hit since 1991...is he even alive? Shit, he wasn't even good in the first place...just a lame pop star trying to pretend like he was Hendrix or something..."

Educate yourself.

as for my thoughts on this....believe it or don't, i didn't totally grow up on straight-up funk. radio in the midwest has gotta be the deadest of 'em all. lol but there were quite a few bands, songs n'such that me and my relatives dug...mo' on this later, ya'll.

Don't mean to add too much to what is becoming more of an Elton John thread- but I would highly recommend his album "Blue Moves" from '76. It's my favorite album of his, and I don't think it gets near enough recognition.

For some reason, (and I have almost all his albums) I never could get into "Tumbleweed Connection". It's just not as catchy as the self titled album that came before it or several of his huge albums that came after.

Other albums I want to mention:

Steely Dan- Pretzel Logic (before they really made it big)
Billy Joel- 52nd Street (came out after The Stranger, his most jazz influenced record)
Spacehog- Resident Alien (skipping a couple of decades here)
Paul Simon- There Goes Rhymin' Simon
Sting- The Dream of the Blue Turtles
REM- Automatic for the People
