MJ did his thing!!! headbang I always thought that he patterned his dancing more so off of Jackie Wilson, though. I can definitely see James's influence on MJ (especially at the end of his little 20-sec dance spotlight). But I guess he really does look up to JB seeing as everytime they showcase Micheal's career, they play that Jackson 5 audition tape of him imitating James.

I just saw the video. Yeah, MJ started off as a James Brown imitator. He found his own style and incorporated all his influences together by the time he was about 15 though. Jackie Wilson, James Brown, Sammy Davis Jnr. and Fred Astaire are the greats that influenced him the most.

Didn't he seem to have a much stronger aura? This is what comebacks are built upon and it is definitely a better start than 2001 for Vince.

I was really glad to see him in something other than that damn red and black shit, too!!! Baby blue complements his see-through skin.

Everyone keeps asking where was Prince. Prince would never show up at anything where Michael was given the honour of saluting James Brown. If Prince wasn't asked to do it, he sure as hell isn't going to show up to watch MJ do it.

I was just being an ass when I asked...of course we know prince wouldn't be there...and how stupid is that. Ego is a mutha...

Good call! Haven't we all seen the black in the day footage of Michael singing "Baby, baby, baby/Baby, baby, baby...I got the feelin'!?" biggrin And doing those slick moves to boot!
I missed the BET awards, but I heard it was a highlight. The King of Pop bringing the Godfather of Soul his cape...Man! Is this performance worthy of another Emmy for MJ? (Remember his performance during Motown's 25th?)

How much props can one fool give 2 MJ?
This is about James Brown, dammit!
And y'all got nothing better to do but talk about one fool imitating one of the most influential black artists in history!
Its time you learn about music and the soul of it. disbelief

There is hardly any originality in MJs work.
Yeah, he can dance ... but many people are better than him.
The Moonwalk? Thats James Brown's Camelwalk -- danced backwards. No big deal.
To compare MJ to the Godfather of Soul is laughable.

James Brown is the most successful solo artist of all times after Elvis Presley. He had more hits in the charts than MJ and Prince together. He had more impact on black music than anybody.

MJ knows that. It was long overdue that he honors Brown by playing his cape-dude. That was nothing he should get another Emmy for -- as suggested ealier on this thread.

Btw: I wont insult you back. You already made enough of a fool of yourself in your post above.

I'm afraid to touch this argument, because I am a huge fan of both MJ and James Brown. But I don't know about James being "the most successful solo artist of all time after Elvis Presley".Are you basing this on record sales,Top 10 hits,or what? If so,then certainly MJ has sold many more records than James Brown,no?

I based this on chart success, just as I have said.
But still I'd claim that JB has sold more singles than MJ. However, albums is another story. Simply because in the era James Brown was at the height of his success, record albums didnt really play a role, they were simply a collection of already released singles.

C'mon it is all said and discussed. There is always a rolemodel, even for James Brown. MJ has always mentioned that Fred and James and Sammy are his influences, so what is your point? Do you expect that every artist is unique and that we open up the big music book and compare everybody until we found the great one who invented everything? Or are you just an intolerant James Brown fanatic? At least James has recognized, that MJ has something special, you don't have to.

Of course. Louis Jordan. And even a little Joe Tex.

MJ has always mentioned that Fred and James and Sammy are his influences, so what is your point?

My point was that you cant compare the originality and creative impact of those two artists.
My point also was that on this thread people seem to give MJ more props than JB. That makes me sick. For someone who carries the honorable Blue Note logo in your avatar, you seem to go quite far in comparing a pop-icon to a real soul singer.

Do you expect that every artist is unique and that we open up the big music book and compare everybody until we found the great one who invented everything?

Where did I sday that? Stop speculating.

Or are you just an intolerant James Brown fanatic?

I'm a James Brown fan. But neither intolerant, nor fanatic.

At least James has recognized, that MJ has something special, you don't have to.

OFFICIALLY recognized. In private, he will tell you something different about MJ.

Well said. We all get our influences from some1. So what?I recognise all myself and i am not 15 anymore 2 start dissin' some artist, especially in crappy comparisons 2 some1 as phenomenal as MJ. And he is that. Just recognise it like many of the peers that he looks up 2 do.

Please learn how to type before you post. My eyes are getting irritated.

You are right though, MJ is a pretty good entertainer. But I am talking about musicianship. Musical creativity. Musical inspiration. JB still beats MJ's show. Ho often does Michael Jackons entertain? Very rarely. James Brown lives on stage. He still masters more than 100 shows a year -- at age 73.

And to answer your question: James Brown has sold more singles than MJ -- or P. Is that what you wanted to know?

I'm not dissin MJ. I'm just saying that he cant keep up with the work of James Brown. He simply cant. If you claim the opposite, you need to study the history of black music with a little bit more enthusiasm.

You see, your problem is that you are so limited in your understanding of music that the only way you can defend your poor position is by insulting other debaters.
I happen to enjoy music a lot, maybe too much sometimes. I am neither a critic, nor a self-proclaimed-critic. I am simply setting someone straight who still is wet behind the ears and seriously believes that MJ may one day sit on JBs throne.

It's good that u luv James Brown so much. Good 4 u. I would still like 2 c James Brown sell out concerts like Michael. Particularly outside the USA. U continue 2 amuse. I would like 2 c James Brown sell 40+ million copies of an album. While he may b good dancing ang prancing on stage...i hardly think u can say that Michael is anything but a great dancer. Sure he borrow 4rom others. But he puts all 2gether much better than James Brown. His shows r fantastic. And i wish i could picture a routine in my mind like i can of Billy Jean. That is something all entertainers should aspire 2. What a great song and how it all works so well on stage. I always remember this, and whenever he does it, he does it with consistance and quality. Never full of drugs. U want comparisons, i can keep on going.

oh yeah, and Brown may b great, but outside the USA most people think that he is dead or that guy who got busted 4 drugs. Despite some peoples' views about MJ, they can at least remember all the great stuff he has done musically 2.
