MARVIN GAYE'S SENSUAL MASTERPIECE, 'I WANT YOU,' REMASTERED AND EXPANDED FOR TWO-CD DELUXE EDITION WITH PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED TRACKS; COMPANION LP, RARE '70S CLASSIC 'MUSICAL MASSAGE,' FROM GAYE'S PRODUCER/WRITER LEON WARE, EXPANDED FOR U.S. CD DEBUT

The complete story of the making of Marvin Gaye's sensual tour de force 'I Want You' is finally told in music and text with the July 29, 2003 releases of Gaye's 2-CD 'I Want You - Deluxe Edition' and Leon Ware?s 'Musical Massage ? Expanded Edition,' both from Motown/UME. A highly unusual yet fascinating release, the two reissues are musically and thematically intertwined.

'I Want You - Deluxe Edition' features Gaye's original #1 R&B/#4 Pop 1976 album, digitally remastered, including the #1 R&B/#15 Pop title track and Top 20 R&B "After The Dance." Added are one previously unreleased and two rare single mixes, plus a second disc encompassing an entire alternate, unreleased version of the album that includes different vocals, new and alternate mixes from the original session reels, and three session outtakes.

Gaye?s original album, his first studio album since the smash 'Let's Get It On' (also available in a two-CD Deluxe Edition), is a passionate love poem to Janis Hunter, his soon-to-be second wife. The 'I Want You - Deluxe Edition' 28-page booklet comes with an emotional introductory essay by Jan, rare family photographs and essays detailing the sessions.

'Musical Massage - Expanded Edition' is the U.S. CD debut of the overlooked 1976 album from Ware, the producer and writer of 'I Want You.' Considered a classic of romantic funk, 'Musical Massage' is expanded with five rare tracks: three previously-unreleased-anywhere and two previously-unreleased-in-the-U.S., all from the 'I Want You' sessions. The CD booklet includes an essay by Ware.

'I Want You' began with Ware, who had earlier written for Ike & Tina Turner, Michael Jackson, Minnie Riperton, Quincy Jones and others, and in 1975 was working on tracks for his own album. He was also putting together a demo for co-writer T-Boy Ross to become a solo artist. When Motown chairman Berry Gordy heard the songs, he felt they were better suited for Gaye, who hadn?t been in the studio for two years. Gaye so loved them that he asked Ware to produce and co-write his entire next album.

The single mixes are the promo-only, yellow vinyl version of the title track; the rare B-side instrumental version of "I Want You"; and the previously unreleased instrumental version of "Feel All My Love Inside," titled "Strange Love." Disc Two, The Sessions: Alternate Mixes, Alternate Vocals & Outtakes, opens a window into the making of the album. Featured is a moving acappella and rhythm mix of "I Want You," and a different lyrical version of "I Wanna Be Where You Are."

Ware's 'Musical Massage' was issued a few months after I Want You and was eclipsed by the shadow of Gaye's album. But from "Learning How To Love You" to "Instant Love" (with Riperton), "Body Heat" to "Turn Out The Light," Ware's falsetto proves among soul's most haunting. The bonuses are five original versions of tracks re-made by Gaye for 'I Want You,' including "Don't You Wanna Come," a rough demo for "After The Dance."

The genius of both Gaye and Ware on 'I Want You' has since been heard in the grooves of Prince, R. Kelly, Madonna, Mary J. Blige, Method Man and more. 'I Want You' and 'Musical Massage' are aural sex at its finest.

I don't think that one'll be too far behind...
I think eventually they'll give the deluxe treatment to every single one of Mr. Gaye's albums... At least I hope so...
