I'm SO glad someone has started such a thread. At work I listen to soul stations and man it's like all day I'm hearing hooks that have been sampled in hip-hop. I'm like, "Oh, snap! I didn't know this was the original beat!" Sometimes I write them down. I've heard where Salt & Pepa got their "shoop" hook (can't remember the name of the song, though.) Lee Fields' "Problems" was sampled by Pharcyde in "She Keeps on Passing Me By." There was this song (can't think of the rapper) that sampled Sammy Davis Jr.'s "The Shelter Of Your Arms" it began: In this cold world no matter where I go the clouds are all the same. I had no idea that was Sammy's song! I'm tellin' you, you can't go wrong listing to the old joints! thumbs up! smile

Funny, but when I hear a hip-hop song with a funky beat, I always think it's a sampled beat. I have a tendency to ID the sampled beat in many songs, although there are some that I'm stumped by.

Okay, back to the question... Gosh! I'd have to hear that cut. Thinking back though, Eric B. & Rakim sampled James Brown, so I'm guessing it's a JB sample. (I've really got to hear the song, though.)

The sample from "Eric B. is President" came from the JB's "Pass the Peas"...right?

Okay, guess I was hearing the wrong song! biggrin I'm old; this is hard when I can't actually hear the song. I'm probably off track but the title of Biz Markie's song reminds me another one. It's something like "Put the money where your mouth is." It was an instrumental jam. I think the Sugar Hill Gang sampled it in "Livin' in the Fast Lane."

You know what used to really piss me off?

Luniz - I Got 5 on it.

All that was, was "Why You Treat Me So Bad" and they rapped over it. Write your own fucking music! Or at least get something more original, damn. You take away the music of that great song, and what do you have? A guy rapping, that's all.

This is probably a no-brainer for you aces, but for us rusty ones... I just heard the Delfonics "Ready or Not Here I Come" and realized that Missy Elliot used the intro in "Sock It 2 Me" feat. Da Brat.
