Music legends whos kids actually made some good music

I saw the Lisa Marie Presley video the other day and damn does that song suck! It started me to thinking. Very few children of musical legends have actually made music worth listening to. I have listed a few I can think of off the top of my head that have put out some quality shit.

The Reddings (Sons of Otis Redding)
Lalah Hathaway (Daughter of Donnie Hathaway)
Thelonious Monk, Jr (Son of Thelonious Monk Sr)

Those are just a few that came to mind right off. Anyone care to add others?

EW! you have got to be kidding me!

Jakob Dylan did ok with the Wallflowers.

and although I haven't heard any of it, I heard Dweezil Zappa did some ok stuff.

Branford Marsalis I liked, especially as his alias Buckshot Lefonque

Oh! Brian Wilson's daughters, but I can't remember their names.

That's all I can think of.

J S Bach's son, Carl Philipp Emanuel, springs to mind as the most obvious example.

That I did not know.

I'm not a big fan of hers, but I guess it's ok.

Yes! TS Monk comes to mind.

Believe it or not, but I was thinking about this very topic. What triggered it? Of all things hearing a David Cassidy song on the radio. I once saw this show that featured his teenage daughter; guess, she was trying to become the next Britney Spears, or something. But, she was trying to do so with a remake of her dad's "I think I love you." I don't think her music career ever really took off.

So, that got me to thinking about Lisa Marie, and Julian Lennon, among others. Of course there's Bob Marley's kids, Sissy Houston's daughter, Tito Jackson's sons.

Gosh, besides Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers, it's really hard to come up with acts that don't seem like one-hit wonders.

What triggered it for me was seeing Lisa Maria on TV and thinking if her dad wasn't Elvis no way in hell would she have a record deal. Funny you mentioned David Cassidy's daughter. I was thinking about that too as I wrote this. That little piece on her was sad. You could see she had no talent and was truely crushed when her song tanked.

I don't know if he has a proper record deal, but the unfortunately named Rolan Bolan (son of Mark) has quite a voice on him.

You saw it too! I couldn't help but think how she probably wanted to be the next Britney. Her people must've thought her name and a remake of her dad's tune would form an instant connection in the minds of the masses and possibly spell instant success. Poor thing.

Exactly, that album was AMAZING!!
Julian and John didnt have a good relationship at all, but were patching things up when JOHN was killed. I think PHOTOGRAPH SMILE would have thrilled JOHN. If JOHN were alive i think he would have praised this work. But then again I think alot of the Beauty of PHOTOGRAPH SMILE came from the LOSS.

Doyle Bramhall II - which I realize ain't EXACTLY funk, but hey, he IS married to Susannah Melvoin, so, y'all should KNOW!

He's the son of the guitarist/singer that co-wrote a lot of Stevie Ray Vaughan songs, and is also a good blues musician in his own right, but DBII is THA BOMB.

For a while I thought that the girls from Heart and Wilson Phillips were related. I don't think I thought that the Wilson sisters (Ann and Nancy) were their (Carnie and Wendy) moms...maybe young aunts. I don't know.

The album debuted at number 101, despite tons of hype! I don't think Sony thought the album was going to do anything considering they released it the same day as J Lo's album. And do you believe that Ozzy left Sony, probably becuase of this? I loved his last album and nobody else did, which was a shame becuase everyone paid attention to that damn show and ignored his music (and they still might).

Judy Garland's daughter Liza Minelli became famous first for being Judy's daughter, then for having her own drug problem. wink ... oh, and along the way, she won an Oscar, sang with the Rat Pack and is still a fucking amazing performer. nod

The whole Wilson-Phillips thing was in fact two legends daughters... Brian Wilson, of the Beach Boys' two daughters Carnie and Wendy... and from the Mamas & the Papas, "papa" John and "mama" Michelle Phillips' daughter Chynna Phillips. I loved the debut album, but the follow up went nowhere.

Someone mentioned Julian Lennon. nod

Nancy Sinatra had a corny hit with "These Boots Were Made For Walkin'"... nothing after. shrug

Tito and Jermaine Jackson's boys formed 3T... they had a minor hit with their debut album. Haven't heard from them in awhile either.

Some of the kids from the O'Jays members formed the group LaVert... they had a couple hits including, "Casanova".

Sheila E. is the daughter of percussionist Pete Escovedo... he's still touring last I heard, and uh, she did pretty well.

I think, in general, the sons and daughters of these celebrities have had it pretty rough. lol

Just kidding, but they do have every door opened for them. That's the easy part. The door is open for them, but they have to keep it open with their talent...and kudos to them if they can. nod
