Boo-Yaa.
That isnt saying much though about the Grammys. The Grammys have time and time again proven that they are completely in the dark about the music industry. Even though Steely Dan deserved it because they are just a much much much better band than *yawn* Radiohead. I just dont get Radiohead. I have some of their albums and still think they are awful. Just boring, overrated, crap to me. Radiohead and their clone Coldplay wish they sounded like Muse. "I'm here to chew bubblegum and kick ass, and I'm all out of bubblegum"

Alright:
I've just had my 1st complete "listen" to Everything Must Go.. & as usual, the high quality of the music is there, the lyrics are typically "far out".. about 1/3 of the songs "jump out" at me, most notably Things I Miss The Most Green Book Everything Must Go Then, "Slang Of Ages" is certainly interesting, if for no other reason than the fact that WALTER sings lead on this track- the 1st time he's ever sung lead on an actual Dan track. That simply blows me away. Actually, "sing" may be a bit of a stretch- for other than the chorus.. it's really more like he's.. "talking melodically" over the music.. It will probably take me the rest of the year to get used to his voice. So overall.. after the 1st listen.. I'd say the best song from this latest batch is Everything Must Go. I'm sure that as I continue to listen to this disc, more of these interesting little nuggets will grow on me.. & I am STILL waiting for the Nissan Pavillion tickets to go on sale.. & at this point, I'm leaning to making a road trip up to Philadelphia to check them out when they play in that area. A new Steely Dan album: CHRISTMAS IN JUNE for me.. double dreaming a page at a time.. I'll see you tonight..

Yes, I like Godwhacker as well. And The Last Mall, Pixeleen, and Everything Must Go are great too. I was slightly disappointed with the new album after the first listen, though. However, the last album (2 Against Nature) took me several listens to really get into it, so I expect this album will be the same way. I don't think it's quite as strong as 2 Against Nature from a musical standpoint, but hopefully after a few more listens, it will be just as interesting. | |

It's now been just over 24 hours since my 1st listen to Everything Must Go, & I have to admit..
this album is.. starting to.. grow on me! I'm still really digging things i miss.. for its chorus green book for its "subdued sexiness" & essentially for all the elements of the track & everything must go for the chord "progression" of the piano melody which repeats throughout the song, working its way into my subconcious.. as well as the line "frankly I could use a little face time".. this song is really starting to remind me of On The Dunes, from Kamakiad (I know, I know- it's not "right" to compare the new disc to older stuff I love..) Yeah, these 3 I'm digging the most.. but I'm definitely starting to feel other tracks that initially made me say "huh?" I believe what initially threw me off was.. the tempo of the songs. It seems more times than not, the tempo is s l o w e r on their songs. On EMG, 5 to 7 tracks could be classified as "upper mid-tempo" or "up-tempo" by "Steely Dan standards"; tempo-wise, there are more songs like pixeline than the title track. This is not necessarily a "bad thing".. I simply was expecting something more.. "typical" of their recent work, in terms of the tempo of the songs. In fact, of all the major SD releases, I'd say that EMG is collectively the most "up-tempo" disc they've ever done, as well as their "funkiest" disk ever. This is 1 reason why I love, admire & respect the music of Steely Dan: JUST when you think you know what they're going to do, they come at you with something else. Go 'head on wit yo BAD SELF, Steely Dan! I'll see you tonight..
