Black Rock Bands....

I'm interested in hearing from anyone who can expose me to some music by a all "Black Rock" band that we haven't heard about, past and present. Let's just assume everyone knows about the following;
Living Colour, Bad Brains, Fishbone, Busboys, 24-7 Spyz, Sound Barrier, and all the other major acts.

Weapon of choice if you don't know already run out and by all three of their cd's: Bozo the town, Highper spice, and illoominutty. These guys are awesome and also have a connection with fishbone. Fish plays on some of their tracks. Another band is ghetto spade destruction, but good luck finding their cd since it was released on a independent label.

ahhh... something i know well about. they can have the rap stuff and all that but i will say one thing... black men can rock!

there are many different kinds of "black rock" (for lack of a better word). There is the nu-metal, rapping over hard rock music. Bands like Shooteez Groove, Hed(pe), 2 Skinnee J's and the originators Stuck Mojo. Besides Stuck Mojo, Im really not into that stuff too much though.

Then you got the hard rocking bands that just happen to have a black guy singing like Sevendust.

Weapon of Choice is has some choice cuts.

And, I mentioned in another thread, Super 8. They had one song that kind of tried to become a hit but really didnt. They are one of my favorites of that genre. They are a little more mellow and the lead singer also has a solo album under the name "Khaleel" which is pretty good also.

Some might call it Black Funk (which sounds awful repetitive), but I think the first four Funkadelic albums, especially America Eats Its Young and Free Your Mind are some good reference points. You can also check out Sly And The Family Stone's There's A Riot Goin On.

Wow! I forgot all about Sound Barrier. I've seen Living Colour in concert 3x and I'm not even a fan! (Friends were.) I've seen Fishbone too! Anyway, what about Ice-T's Body Count? Saw them at the first Lollapalooza in Saratoga Springs years ago, went with friends because...Living Colour was there. rolleyes smile

I liked both of them.

But Bad Brains is my personal favorite.

Actually, I would submit to you that The John Coltrane Quartet was a great "black rock band." Sure, they played jazz, but their music was so frenzied and their solos so innovative that they could play with any rock band.

24-7 Spyz was pretty damn cool. I saw them open up for Stuck Mojo back in the day and it was like the passing of the torch. The older 24-7 Spyz had been through the ringer and were about to call it quits (which they have done a couple times) and the young Stuck Mojo were just getting started on their journey of never fully being appreciated.

Both of those bands deserved more.

I've been hearing a buzz about mos def having a rock band together, which features old members from living color, the drummer and bass player, and a member from funkadelic or the p funk all stars. The name of the band is Jack Johnson, though when I do a search on this name all I get is some singer. Anyways I do know the band exist for sure they've played a couple of shows here and there but have no released material. Maybe they're just testing the waters. Mos must've been inspired by his track Rock N roll on black on both sides. I am to anxious to hear this project let alone anything new from mos def. If anyone knows of more info regarding this band please post.

MOTHER'S FINEST were innovators back in the mid 70's. They wrote the song "Baby Love" and a couple other medium hits.

Jayne Kennedy was the singer (who went on to do a cover of "Do Me Baby". They're still around, they play gigs here in Atlanta every now and then. If you can get your hands on "ANOTHER MOTHER FURTHER", DO IT!

You will not be disappointed.

Don't Wanna Come Back & Truth Will Set You Free is my JAMs nod "I Wasn't gonna tell nobody!" Joyce was the REAL DEAL man love I miss that woman 2 my core cry

When I was a kid, I used to think that Joyce Kennedy is Chaka Khan's sistah(both ladies have the same vocals and both are the only female lead vocalists in their own bands) lol so much of a fantasy from a kid.

Don't forget Jesse Johnson's "BareMyNakedSoul". IMHO Rock at it's very best. And Jimi Hazel (24-7 Spyz) is still kicking it.

The term "Black Rock" is very misleading because Rock was really spawned in the black community anyway.

You must mean "all members being black" 'cause I could've sworn Darius Rucker was black.
