becuz Prince doesn't have to prove himself anymore. he's invented and innovated more times than most artists have ever. if you end up saying things like "why can't Prince be like whoever?" then it's a clear indication that they are trying to be like Prince. and that has proved my point.

and yes...anything with Jay-Z and Pharell should never be compared to Prince. anyone can make a song sound like the Beatles.
shit

Jay-Z, no offense, is not in the same league as Prince and the two are night and day. I liked Jay-Z's early stuff, but since about 1998, mainstream "hip-hop" just isn't my thing, with the exception of Wu-Tang Clan and it's members, 2Pac, KRS-1, Roots, OutKast, Missy, some others, and even some Ludacris. But, the only thing you can say is that Prince's CD's aren't being mass marketed anymore, and he isn't kissing corporate behind anymore- therefore, his records don't get played as much. If Prince's records DID get played more in the mainstream, I believe the man would've had at least 5 songs in the top 40 in the last 8 years. But of course, he would have to sell out to the nonsense surrounding the practices of major labels in order to achieve that right now, which I don't see him doing- I sure wouldn't. I only want to be a producer/concept creator/studio artist right now anyhow. "The Everlasting Now" had top 40 all over it!

Peace,
JD

This kind of tired argument has been going round and round like a revolving door over the past three decades.I used to think this kind of thing was healthy...but is it really?

Just to cite an example: as much as I respect Terence Trent D'Arby, when he emerged on the scene in the latter part of the eighties with his debut, the derivative 'Hardline According To...', I recall that in '87 after the Wembley fiasco many disgruntled Prince fans here in the UK were touting Terence as the next big thing, with many members of the Controversy fan club actually speculating whether Terence was the real deal. Worse still, some went as far as to say that the efforts of Controversy club would be better served by supporting Terence's output instead of Prince's. But it quickly transpired that Terence never had the legs to last the course.

During the nineties there was talk of Tricky snatching the purple crown as word got round that he was allegedly capable of amassing an eclectic musical output to rival Prince's. But where is Tricky now?

Of course, it is the trendy prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothes.

But, in the end, the half-wit remains a half-wit and the emperor remains an emperor.

While I hope you didn't intend this, there's no way you could compare Jay-Z and Prince. Jay-Z can flow, but he doesn't even compare to artists within his own genre (B.I.G., Rakim, KRS-ONE, Common, Mos Def for starters).

JayZ is the fool sampling Prince's lyrics in Bonnie&Clyde...
Rapping Mr Shakur's rap...which is just very VERY SAD!...

whereas Prince is original... he doesnt NEED 2 use ANOTHER Rtist's Words or Music...

& i dont think having your song on the radio these days is sumthin 2 b proud of,considering the company u will b in.
