Terence Trent D'Arby is an artist who knows who he is and is committed to being that.

He was born on a Thursday, the 15th of March in the year of our Lord 1962, at 3.25 am in New York City, NY.

He stands proud at 6'1 and stabilizes at around 144 lbs.
His eyes are hazel green and his hair is brown.

Now that he has Sananda Records he is as excited as he has ever been to be bringing his uncompromising inspiration to the public.

He has lived all over the world and loves the world, yet feels that he is quintessentially an American artist;
of free independent spirit,of mixed blood (Native American, Portuguese, Spanish, Irish,African) mixed temperament and mixed cultural interests, like America herself.

He plays drums, percussion,bass, guitar and keyboards;
writes, produces, arranges, dances and sings all from his heart and like a child is very curious and very easily amused.

'WILD CARD' is his fifth collection of songs following
'VIBRATOR', 1995
'SYMPHONY OR DAMN', 1993
'NEITHER FISH NOR FLESH', 1989
'INTRODUCING THE HARDLINE', 1987
He lives in Milano, Italy
and truly loves music,
the rest is unimportant.

To start with I'd reccommend his first and last CDs :'INTRODUCING..." and 'WILD CARD'

I only heard his "If U Let Me Stay" & "She Kissed Me"

But I don't get why the media is making him the modern day Prince? Is it becoz of the name changing? I only hear P's influence in his music but I don't think he resemble him that much.

my personal favs are "symphony or damn"

or "vibrator" ...

His first album - doesnt have a bad song on it ... his second album ("Neither flesh ...nor fish" ) contains alot of experimental sounds ,etc ... that seemed to be well recieved by the critics ... but i never got into it ...

His third album "symphony..." was worn out in my cd changer ... as was "vibrator" ...

Just listening now to his latest ... which i do like ...

And , after seeing him ... i am gettin back into "neither flesh nor fish" ...

back when he was becoming popular - in 87-88... he was compared to Prince alot ... because he is very original ... and his music is tough to define ... ballads ... rock... pop ... funk ...

another easily comparable - on his album covers ... he writes ... "produce, arranged ... etc ... by Terrence " ...much like prince likes to do ...

the other night in concert , he did play piano alittle ... and guitar ...

in my opinion ... he isnt anywhere near Prince's proficiency ... BUT - his voice is like an orchestra all in itself ... awesome!!!

Harlepolis,

You've got to get Introducing the Hardline. All these songs are great. You will not need to fast forward.

My favorites are: If You All Get to Heaven, Wishing Well,
Sign Your Name, and Seven More Days -- God, the lyrics and emotion in this song are great.

Now, as far as why he's great and why the Prince comparison... It's kind of hard to explain if you didn't partake of him when he debuted in the late 80's. I mean, you didn't get to pass the T.V. and become mesmerized by his haunting hazel eyes, those braids and his affecting voice and mood. He was something so cool, so intense, so distinctive. I think this unique essence made him resemble Prince, but mostly because he was deeply soulful and wrote from his heart. I believe his debut was written and produced by him alone (aside from the remake of Who's Loving You.)

Good choice. It´s so vain and pompous and plain bad it´s scary. I bought it second hand too, for around one dollar, and I still consider it a waste of money.

As a post-script to my earlier post:

I think D'Arby's cryptic lyrics and emotional stylings (with all the yelling and screaming) strongly recall Prince and make people compare them. But although D'Arby's voice can go high and soft, it's rapturously rough and more masculine than Prince's, in my opinion.

[ OK... stopping to swoon now while listening to Sign Your Name. Yes. Rough. Masculine. Yes. Yes. Yes! ]

Ok. I'm back. I don't know what voodoo music sounds like, but D'arby's must come close. God, the whole experience -- from instruments to voice -- is so hypnotic. I'm pretty sure he's cast spells over records to put people into a trance.

Vibrator is my favourite album of all time, IMHO, but I agree with you that Holding On To You is the best song of the album. But all TTD / Sananda albums are great!!!
With a very special thank you to Tina: Is hammer already absolute, how much some people verändern...ICH hope is never so I will be! And if, then I hope that I would then have wen in my environment who joins me in the A....

Seriously, just get all of it. He hasn't done that many albums.

  • "Introducing the Hardline" is a must-have, because it has some of his biggest hit singles etc. His "Purple Rain".

  • "Neither Fish Nor Flesh" is his "arty" album, and I think it is fab. It was recorded in Dublin too smile Worth getting. His "Around the World in a Day".

  • "Symphony or Damn" - very eclectic, and what many say was his best. There really isn't a bad track on it. It's his "Sign O The Times", kinda. It has "Seasons", "Turn the Page". Good enough reason for me smile

  • "Vibrator" - personally I felt it was his weakest albums, but there are some still incredible tracks on there like "We Don't have much time together" etc.

  • "Wildcard" is another sprawling electic collection of songs. It must be bought.

And that's it. You'll get em all pretty cheaply I'd imagine.

Symphony Or Damn covers pretty much everything he has done within a single CD. Also I've grown to value the album a bit more than the others during the years. They're all great - but "Wildcard" should be approached with some caution. It certainly isn't as uprocking and in-your-face as his previous work. A more mature collection, but at times somewhat boring.

'Neither Fish Nor Flesh" is to TTD what "Hear My Dear' Is to Marvin Gaye, both were slated on their release but are now classics in their own right. Who wants an artist to play safe, I thought all Prince would understand that? Anyway you can't go wrong with any of TTD's albums, they are all killer but I have to say "The Hardline" is to me my least fav out of the 5.

Well, TTD like Prince didn't feel compelled to just record R&B and Rap because of his skin color. He ventured into rock, alternative, and folk sounds at the same time. Much like Prince, he shot down the stereotypical "ideal" of what a person like himself "should" sound like.

Also, in one of his first videos he can be seen clad in leather riding around on a motorcyle, which brought back memories of Purple Rain.

He's wonderfully unpredictable. He too had beef with his record labels but unlike Prince, maintained a level of quality and integrity in his work. Bottom line, TTD truly sounds like he has found peace.

Every one of his albums is worth getting. One of the rarest of them to find would certainly be "Neither Fish Nor Flesh", so if you come across that one day, snatch it up.

Vibrator was the album that really made my jaw drop.

Neither Fish Nor Flesh was ripped apart in reviews for being bizzare. But every time I listen to it, it sounds like a classic soul album with unconventional instrumentation. If you were to hear nothing but his vocals on the album, it bears a strong resemblance to a Sam Cooke album.
