Luther's version of Stevie's Creepin'. Luther's version is so sexy. I also love Al Green's cover of the BeeGees How Can You Mend a Broken Heart. Also, if you don't have it, listen to Miss Gladys Knight's version of Curtis Mayfield's The Makings Of You.

J5 "who's loving u" shits over the Temps' version.
Semisonic "erotic city"
INXS "the loved one" beats the original 60s song by The Loved Ones
(inxs did 2 versions, one in 1982,one in 1987... both kick ass)
MJ "come 2gether"
Isaac Hayes "by the time i get 2 phoenix"
Bon Jovi "with a little help from my friends" (live versions around 1992/93)

* I like Prince's Nothing Compares to You. But I much prefer Sinead O'Connor's version.

* Also, I luuuv Prince's cover of Crow's Everyday is a Winding Road.

(ON the flip side of this question, I hate Boys to Men's remake of G.C. Cameron's It's So Hard to Say Goodbye. They sound so nasally and they can't enunciate. How the hell was their song at the top of the charts. )

Luther is a genuis at remaking songs and in many cases, creating a version that tops the original. Here's another remake that I like better than the original...

***EnVogue "Giving Him Something That He Can Feel"(1992)---I prefer this version to the 1976 Aretha Franklin original.

I'll come back with more later...

D'Angelo's remake of Smokey Robinson's "Cruisin'" (the original wasn't bad at all...I'm just not crazy over Smokey's voice).

Stevie Wonder's remake of The Beatles "We Can Work It Out."

MJs version of Come Together? Are you kidding? Talk about a slaughter of a song. Nothing touches the original...but Aerosmith's isn't bad.

Also Bon Jovi's With A Little Help...what a fuckin joke.

Since I am on the subject of The Beatles...the best cover of a Beatles tune? "We Can Work It Out" by Stevie Wonder.

Joe Cocker's version of "the Letter"...much better than the Boxtops.

Finally...Terence Trent D'arby's version of Who's Lovin You is better than J5s and The Temps.

I respectfully disagree. Prince Rogers Nelson's falsetto can't fuck with Eddie Kendricks'. Prince's guitar solo on the Small Club boot, however, makes my heart skip a beat.

IMO Robert Palmer's remake of "I Didn't Mean To Turn You On" is better than the original Cherrelle version.

Prince's is my favorite, but Sinead's version of "Nothing Compares 2 U" leaves the Family's original version in the dust. (Those "oh oh oh oh oh oh oh" things are really cheesy.)

I like Marvin Gaye's "I Want You" but I prefer Madonna's. Very haunting, eery, and takes the sentiment of the song to a whole different level that Marvin probably never even felt.

George Michael on "Somebody To Love."

Celine Dion "All By Myself" biggrin

Me'Shell Ndegeocello "May This Be Love"

David Bowie "Wild Is The Wind"

Whitney Houston "I Will Always Love You"

Janet Jackson "Tonight's The Night" and Madonna "American Pie" ... I still hate both of these songs, but their covers allow me to at least tolerate the tunes in SOME form.

... hmmm. hmmm more to come question

Air Supply is a guilty pleasure of mine, but I prefer Bonnie Tyler's version of "Making Love Out Of Nothing At All" (thereby giving her vocals on my top 2 all-time favorite songs wink). It's better-suited to her voice, I think.

Speaking of Bonnie Tyler, I wouldn't say I prefer it (the song is my all-time favorite), but I do like the Nikkie French version of "Total Eclipse Of The Heart."

omg Like 'em both, but Cherelle's version is kissed with that Minneapolis sound. It is so funky.
