What songs ARE the 70s?

Okay,we've already done our lists for the 80s,so now it's time to do the 70s (my favorite decade, btw).I know this is diffcult, but I'm asking you to pick TEN songs that,in your opinion, defined that decade. If you guys need a little assistance, visit this site...

http://www.superseventies...ngles.html

It lists the Top 100 songs of the 70s ( the ten biggest songs from each decade),but of course, you don't have to go with the most commercial or popular songs.I'm gonna spend a little time coming up with my list.Who wants to go first?

UptownDeb

I can't think of ten right off the top but I'll start with a few...

Love to Love You Baby-Donna Summer (this joint stands out because it was sexy as hell, and 16+ minutes to boot!)

Saturday Night Fever Soundtrack (Hey! Guess that's 10 right there! biggrin)

Rapper's Delight-Sugar Hill Gang

Anything by the Steve Miller Band.

That song, "Summer Breeze". (the 70s weren't always pretty)

That other song, "Baker Street", by Gerry Rafferty.

"Heaven Knows" by Donna Summer and Brooklyn Dreams.

And any damn thing by...

maybe I shouldn't admit to it, but that's one of my all-time favorite songs!!! apparently Dave Grohl likes it too, as Foo FIghters covered it a few years back.

I think this is much harder than coming up with an 80's list. The 80's were so video driven that they helped paint a vivid image of what the 80's are/were in our minds. I also don't think we had as many so called mega-stars dominating the decade as was the case with the 80's. Who were the 70's Michaels, Madonnas and Princes? The 70's was also all over the place musically. From rock to disco with soul and funk in between, it wasn't like the 80's where dance music pretty much ruled the musical landscape. Music was also much more "fractured" in the early 70's before disco. You had music that sounded "black" and music that was "white" It would be easier to do a list from 70-75 with both black and white music and then 76-79 all together. Not really a fan of the 70's over all as my memories are of cheesy ass songs by people like Debbie Bone, John Denver and Abba. That said, below would be the 10 songs (no order) that help sum up the decade.

Stayin Alive - The Bee Gees

American Pie - Don McLean

Do Ya Think I'm Sexy - Rod Stewart

YMCA - Village People

Love Will Keep Us Together - Captain & Tennille

ABC - The Jackson 5

Close To You - Carpenters

Bennie And The Jets - Elton John

Dancing Queen - Abba

Country Roads - John Denver

Like intha916 said, compiling a 70s list is really hard. The 70s were all over the map, musically speaking, and it's hard to narrow it down.I've tried my best to come up with a list that includes a little of everything, but I still feel like I left out alot of important stuff out.Anyway, here's my list...

"Band On The Run" by Paul McCartney and Wings (1973)
"Hotel California" by the Eagles (1977)
"Dreams" by Fleetwood Mac (1977)
"Love Train" by the O'Jays (1973)
"Stayin Alive" by The Bee Gees (1977)
"Good Times" by Chic (1979)
"It's Too Late" by Carole King (1971)
"Higher Ground" by Stevie Wonder (1973)
"My Sharona" by the Knack (1979)
"Last Dance" by Donna Summer (1978)

Good list. You have 4 I had thought about including. It is easier to pick the top 10 artists of the 70's. I was kicking that around and came up with:

The Bee Gees
Rod Stewert
Donna Summer
Earth Wind and Fire
John Denver
Stevie Wonder
Elton John
Chic
Olivia Newton John
The Jacksons

Again I don't dig everyone on this list but I think they had the biggest impact during the 70's. What would your top 10 70's artists be?

On second thought, Kiss would have to be on there somewhere. God I hate Kiss.

Of course, you can't talk 70's music without the Bee Gees, and a lot of people have listed Stayin' Alive. You also ahve to consider How Can You Mend a Broken Heart (the site linked above got this title wrong!), Jive Talkin', Nights on Broadway, You Should Be Dancin, How Deep Is Your Love, Night Fever, Too Much Heaven, Tragedy.

The other band that I'm surprised nobody has mentioned is KC and The Sunshine Band. Get Down Tonight has to be included in the discussion of top songs of the 70s.

I placed the song "Dreams" (1977) on my list. You pretty much have to include a song from 'Rumours',that was one of the biggest albums of the 70s.
