Who remembers summertime in the 70s?

Maybe this will re-fresh your memory smile

"Summer" by War (1976)

Ridin' round town with all the windows down
Eight-track playin' all your favorite songs
The rhythm of the bongos fill the park
The street musicians tryin' to get a start

Cause it's Summer
Summer time is here
Yes,it's summer
My time of year

Stretched out on a blanket in the sand
Kids of all ages diggin' Disneyland
Rappin' on the CB radio in your van
We'll give a big ten four to the truckin' man

Cause it's Summer
Summer time is here
Yes,it's summer
My time of year

Young boys playin' stick ball in the street
Fire hydrants help to beat the heat
Old man feeding pigeons in the square
Nightime finds young lovers walking there

Cause it's Summer
Summer time is here
Yes,it's summer
My time of year

In Atlantic City or out in Malibu
Or anywhere between I'm tellin' you
When you feel those balmy breezes on your face
Summer time is the best time any place

Cause it's summer
Summer time is here
Yes,it's summer
My time of year"

Here's a funny memory from that summer of '76...

My dad was driving us to the beach, and on the radio there comes a song in which the man keeps repeating..."light...light...light...light..."

For years,I never knew what the song was until the early 90s,I got a 70s CD and discovered it was "Moonlight Feels Right" by Starbuck...lol...

My ABSOLUTE favorite "summertime in the 70s song" is...(drum roll) "Hot Fun in the Summertime." Sly & the Family Stone singing about the passing of seasons and summer fun...it's so sublime. smile

Sly & the Family Stone - Hot Fun in the Summertime

All: End of the spring and here she comes back
Hi Hi Hi Hi there
Them summer days, those summer days

That's when I had most of my fun, back
high high high high there
Them summer days, those summer days

Rose: I "cloud nine" when I want to

Freddie: Out of school, yeah

Larry: County fair in the country sun

Sly: And everything, it's true, ooh yeah

All: Hot fun in the summertime x 4

All: First of the fall and then she goes back
Bye bye bye bye there
Them summer days, those summer days

Rose: "Boop-boop-ba-boop-boop" when I want to

Freddie: Out of school, yeah

Larry: County fair in the country sun

Sly: And everything, it's true, ooh yeah

All: Hot fun in the summertime x 4

I love, Love, LOVE this song!

Whenever I think of summertime fun, I think of the summer of '76. So many great songs came out "Shame", "Best of My Love"... I spent my summer in North Cackalacka and South Cackalacka biggrin in '76. I remember Nadia Comenici scoring a perfect 10, and Kurt Thomas doing the "Thomas Flare" on the pommel horse...

btw, War's "Summer" is cool too!

I have to admit, I loved the whole disco period around 78-79. GQ's disco nights, Cheryl Lynn's Got to Be Real, Kool and the Gang with Ladies Night, all of that shit! People like to dog disco but I really dug the clean production on a lot of those records. I still feel most of the the criticism leveled at diso is/was racial. My biggest non-music memory of the 70's is the big deal everyone was making over Bo Derek's hair. I was like hell, sisters been sportin the corn rows with beads for years!

Ahh the 70s...driving around with my parents on Sunday afternoons. Sitting in the back seat with my Star Wars action figures while my parents got stoned in the front seat. My mother wearing a purple t-shirt with the legend: Have a Shitty Day! My father, red bandana hiding his fro, playing air guitar, guitar

My 70s summer pics would be:

"Hissing of Summer of Lawns." Joni Mitchell

"Rock The Boat" or "Love and Devotion" can't remember the original title. and/or artist

"Benny and the Jets" Elton John

"Hello...it's me" Todd Rungren

A lot of Barry White and Electric Light Orchestra...

"Afternoon Delight" dunno the artist...

stoned

"Rock The Boat" by Hughes Corporation and "Afternoon Delight" by Starlight Vocal Band or some dumb shit like that. Two songs that make me want to climb the water tower with a high powered rifle.

Oops! Okay, so I'm talkin' late 70s. biggrin Anyway, I remember "Shame" because I was in Jr. High and it was so cool thinking that this funky song with the gritty vocals was sung by a female only a couple of years older than me! You go, Evelyn!

"Hot Fun" has just always reminded me of growing up in the 70s.

I was born in '69, but I can remember how totally carefree I felt back in the late '70s. My sisters and I would sing Best Of My Love for our family talent show. Music was the bomb back then, too. I grew up in a house of music. My uncle was/is a DJ and we had a great time everyday in tha basement. The song that stands out for me as a great summer song, well, two actually: All Day Music by War and Be Thankful For What You've Got by William DeVaughn.

Wow! Thanks. Try telling that to my kids cuz they think I act like I'm fifty. They think my music is "lame" and they don't like old school or Prince. If they didn't look just like me, I would swear they were somebody else's kids. By the way, Harle, before I found out how old you were, I always thought you were older, around my age or older. Don't be offended. You have great taste in music, are an "old soul" and are real cool peeps.

I love the names Iman and Khalid, those are beautiful. I have gotten out of the habit of calling my kids those names. My middle baby, Danny is autistic, so people really get mad when I call him Satan, Jr., but he knows when he doing something he shouldn't, just like the other two. I don't treat him any differently than the others. Musically, he is my favorite. He digs Musiq, india.arie, most definately Jill, etc.,you know, the new people I can listen to. Ain't no hope for the other two!

Remember that the summer of '76 was the Bicentennial??? I think we all O.D'ed on the Red, White and Blue. lol Remember all the different state license plates??

I *really* grew up in the 70's--over that span of ten years, I went from elementary school to graduating from high school (let's hear it for the Class of '80!!!).

Very good point! When you're a kid,you look at the world as being this big, fun, magical place. So maybe that's why we look back so fondly on that era. As for the adults who don't remember things as fondly...they were probably too high to even remember it all wink

The Bicentennial was amazing! I was only about 7 years old but I remember it being a BIG deal. The 4th of July is always a big holiday, but in 1976,it was like Christmas day! Everywhere you went, you saw stars and stripes, red, white and blue.
