me how weak overall the '80s are to me.

Now, now, many of the songs on this list are no more representative of the QUALITY of 80's music than "Whoomp! There It Is!" is of 90's music or "Because I Got High" is of 00's music . . .

are they? omg

In no order and off the top of my head. I didn't peak at anyone else's picks, I just thought of my life in the 80's and whatever came to my mind first is what I wrote down. I love the 80's.

Tainted Love - Soft Cell
The Reflex - Duran Duran
People Are People - Depeche Mode
Owner of a Lonely Heart - Yes
Urgent - Foreigner

What's that song that goes "if you leave, don't leave now da da da da doo de da"??? I think it's in the movie Pretty in Pink. All those 80's movies have great soundtracks...

Hmmm, not be evasive, but that's only 1 song per decade!!

Despite what retro TV programs would have us believe, there were loads of musical movements in the 80s, and certainly more than 1 per decade!

I could maybe do a top 50, but WAAA, Top ten, no way!

Not in any chronological order:

Irene Cara: Fame
Adam & The Ants: Stand & Deliver
Michael Jackson: Billie Jean
Madonna: Holiday
The Police: Every Breath You Take
George Michael: Faith
Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody
Prince: When Doves Cry
Bruce Springsteen: Born In the USA
USA for Africa: We Are The World

not all songs i enjoy or even like, but i think they kind of sum the 80's up.

.

Although there has been some debate over the songs we have ended up with a fairly clear cut consensus in regards to the top 10 artists who define the 80's. Those mentioned in many of the posts are:

Prince
Michael Jackson
Madonna
Lionel Richie
Duran Duran
Whitney Houston
Bruce Stringsteen
Wham\George Michael
Eurythmics
The Police

Outside of including The Culter Club, Cindy Lauper and Run DMC, it's kinda hard to argue with that list. All are true 80's icons.

No U2? No R.E.M.? No Public Enemy? I'd remove Wham for either one of those three.

This isn't about quality it's about image. Poster children for the 80's so-to-speak. While I love me some PE, they aren't the first thing that come to mind when most people think 80's music.

The problem is,there were SO MANY artists/groups who defined the 80s,it's hard to narrow it down to just ten songs. But I think intha916's list of top artists is right on the money. Those are the artists who had the most impact on that era.And I did add a U2 song to my list smile
