What 10 songs ARE the 80's?

If only one 10 song disk were to survive 100 years from now, what 10 songs would best represent what the 80's were about musically? In some cases, these songs might not be ones you feel were the best but rather songs that make you think 80's as soon as you here them. Mine are:

Prince - When Doves Cry
Bille Jean - Michael Jackson
Sweet Dreams - Eurythmics
Madonna - Like a Virgin
Whitney Houston - How Will I Know
Born in the USA - Bruce Springsteen
Walk This Way - Run-DMC
Rio - Duran Duran
Wham - Careless Whisper
Van Halen - Jump

Michael Jackson - Thriller

Whitney Houston - I Wanna Dance With Somebody

D-Train - Something's On Ya Mind (hey, the beats are totally 80's, don't hate!)

Madonna - True Love

LL Cool J - Love

Rick James - Super Freak

George Michael - Father Figure

Janet Jackson - What Have You Done For Me Lately

Prince - Controversy

Pointer Sisters - Jump (For Love)
They did WHAT??!.... disbelief

I'd keep everything you said except I'd replace Cameo's Word Up with Whitney Houston.

While I love the hell out of some Cameo, you would have to include Whiteny. She was the pop diva of the 80's.

To be fair, I really should have done this the way Booyah does his "Jams of the Year" threads over on the Prince music board. Starting with a list and then voting off one at a time. Not even sure if the 80's can be well represented in just 10 songs but I was curious to see what different songs people would come up with.

If you check my list, all artist were mega stars in the 80's with multiple hits. I tried to pick the song that represented them best during the 80's. A-ha only had one hit here in the states. I couldn't see taking anyone off my list to add a one-hit-wonder.

Awww, but they're legends in Norway. 'Lifelines' and 'Minor Earth, Major Sky' are fantastic albums. Morten and the boys still going strong today!

No argument with those choices, though "How Will I Know" is iffy to me because I think of several other songs when I think of 80's music. I'd choose any of these in its place:

1999 -- Prince
Kiss -- Prince
Purple Rain -- Prince
Rebel Without A Pause -- Public Enemy
Don't Worry Be Happy -- Bobby McFerrin
Thriller -- Michael Jackson
All Night Long -- Lionel Richie
Endless Love -- Lionel Richie/D. Ross
With or Without You -- U2
Rock The Casbah -- The Clash (is this technically 80's or '79?)
.

With the Xception of Endless Love, may I say Ur taste is Xcellent. R U cheating becuz, Ur list severely lacks an air of cheese which the 80s were largely all about?! hmm

Actually, I don't particularly dig Endless Love, it just makes me think "80's." Thanks for the props though. There certainly was enough cheese in the 80's to feed Speedy Gonzalez but I have good memories of even some cheesy 80's music.

You might be able to make the argument for Lionel Richie being on the list instead of Whiteny (both represent the cheesy 80's pop scene well)
