Weird Al: 'Wanna B Ur Lovr'

In case I was not the only one who thought this might be a Prince parody on his latest album...it is not.

just a little FYI

btw, his new album is really funny, one of his best. I would suggest it to anyone who has ever liked any of his material.

I'll bet it's a Prince reference, though. His official website says:

Al does get permission from the original writers of the songs that he parodies. While the law supports his ability to parody without permission, he feels it's important for him to maintain the relationships that he's built with artists and writers over the years. Plus, Al wants to make sure that he gets his songwriter credit (as writer of new lyrics) as well as his rightful share of the royalties.

[. . .]

Even though most recording artists really do have a pretty good sense of humor, on a few very rare occasions Al has been denied permission to do a parody. Actually, the only artist to turn Al down consistently over the years has been... well, I would tell you, but my keyboard doesn't have that little "symbol thingy" on it.

(from: http://www.weirdal.com/faq.htm)

Also, I'm pretty sure that "Traffic Jam" on the Alapalooza album is a "style parody" inspired by "Let's Go Crazy."

I'm a big Weird Al fan and I just got this CD today.

I was anxious to hear this song because I, too, thought it was some sort of reference to or style parody of Prince..but after hearing the song, IMO the song seems to be done with Beck in mind (at least musically speaking).

It's VERY reminiscent of Beck's song 'Debra' off of his Midnite Vultures album -- Weird Al's vocals, the music itself, even the strange techno-y background sounds like Beck uses so often in his music.

Perhaps Al did have P in mind in some way with this song, but to me this it seems like more of a style parody of Beck than anybody else.

EDIT: I just headed over to the newsgroup alt.music.weird-al as I hadn't been there recently and wanted to see others' thoughts on the new album and I saw this post there that basically supports what I'd said about the Beck "feel" to "Wanna B Ur Lovr". Apparantly the WA fans have been debating recently whether or not this song was gonna be about/was a style parody of Prince. lol

Anyway, here's the post I just read:
There's been some debate here as to whether "I Want 2 Be Your Lovr" is a style parody of Beck or The Artist Formerly Known As The Artist Formerly Known As Prince. It's definitely Beck, though since Beck himself sometimes borrows from the Purple One I can see why it would be confusing. Specifically, it's based on "Debra" from "Midnite Vultures" (at least as much as "Dog Eat Dog" is based on "And She Was"). Give it a listen -- the opening is nigh-identical, and the subject matter is
similar.

on weirdal.com at the Q&A section:

Jeannie of Tokyo, Japan asks: Was "Wanna B Ur Lovr" intended to be a style parody of anyone specific? It totally sounds like Midnite Vultures-era Beck to me, but I was just wondering.

You’re right on the money. The Prince-like title throws a lot of people, but that song is actually intended to sound like me trying to sound like Beck trying to sound like Prince.

This is probably my favorite song on the album, it's hilarious. The Frank Zappa wannabe song, Genius in France, comes at a close second. And "Bob" (the Bob Dylan wannabe song) is really good too.

Excellent album.

I heard a cut from this record and I laughed as hard as I did at "One More Minute" back in 1985. It's really worth checking out.

I normally love Weird Al, and almost all of the parodies he puts out, but I just finished listening to my sister's copy of his new album...

and it sucks major ass.

Just stupid shit, especially "Genius in France".

The only one I thought was decent was "The Complicated Song" -but that may be just cuz I despise Avril Lavigne.

The last time I heard work this bad from Al was when I listened to his ooooold stuff, like "Another One Rides the Bus".

Quite frankly, I was disappointed.

HOWEVER I am more than willing to give it time, see if any of it'll grow on me...

The next time you are starting a thread on Weird Al YANKOVIC also mention his last time so I won't waste my time for fooled to think it would be about "weird" Al Jourgensen. Thank you.
