Janet Jackson afficianados...

What is the meaning of her song "Velvet Rope"? I havent heard it nor have desire to...but Marilyn Manson uses the term in a new song... and being that they're "friends" --it must be intentionally used.

I'm probably wrong (but, that never stops me from givin' it a whirl): I thought I read her making mention of it as a metaphor to illustrate the human desires to belong and to erect barriers of exclusivity.

Velvet Rope is about the need to feel special. Velvet ropes are the dividing lines at clubs and special events. If you can get beyond the Velvet Rope you are "somebody." If you can't get beyond it, you're viewed as worthless or not up to par. The binaries of superior/inferior, signifier/signified, target/agent, normal/deviant, dominant/submissive, etc. play crucial roles in the structure of this concept. The Velvet Rope motif addresses issues of self-esteem, importance, acceptance and belonging -- not only in society, but personally and it is this thread that binds the project -- from the title track, "You," "I Get Lonely," "Free Xone," "Together Again," "What About," Empty "Tonight's The Night" to "Special" and the hidden track "Can't Be Stopped."

The album is recorded in a "stream of consciousness" style. It's contemplative at points, frustrated and elegaic at others yet ultimately cathartic and cleansing. It's trying its best to juggle its demons (you can also hear it in the interludes).

ThreadBare, you're on to something. The Velvet Rope can also be viewed as the self-imposed barriers we place on ourselves, whether at school, at work, in our relationships, it can comment on our competitiveness and our vanity. Sometimes we shield ourselves from others and put up "Velvet Ropes" guarding our true feelings and emotions. It's ironic, we try hard to get pass the Velvet Rope, but once we are on the other side we're quick to erect our own barricades.

Wasn't this the song when Janet was trying to describe her line of sexuality? As if she didn't know if she was straight or gay? Kinda like "strattling the fence."

No. You're probably thinking od her remake og "Tonight's the night" by Rod Stewart, but even that song had nothing to do with her own sexuality

this special need
that's within us
brings out the best
yet worst in us
follow the passion
that's within u
living the truth
will set u free

Put others down
2 fill us up
opressing me
will opress u
outside leave judgement
outside leave hate
one love's the answer
u'll find in u

we hav a special need
2 feel that we belong
come with me inside
inside my velvet rope

"we have the need 2 feel special, this need can bring out the best is us, yet the worst in us. This need cre8ted, The Velvet Rope"

A very cool song. Uses the sample "Hobo Scratch" by Malcom McLaren as the forground beat, and it IS TIGHT!
This is the dawning of a new funk revolution

Heres the line from MANSON---

"I want to hang all you cattle
With your VELVET ROPE

Motherfckers step up and get into an orderly line

I'll show you how to make a muscle

It takes less strength to grin than
it does to spit on all of you "
