Macy Gray - The Trouble With Being Myself

I love Macy, but this cd just doesn't do it for me as a follow-up to The Id. She expanded so much on that LP and now she sounds like shes regressing back to the format of On How Life Is. Trouble has it's moments but this one has my love affair with Macy on the fence. Any opinions on this LP?

Yeah I said my piece on the other Macy threads, she's no longer on my "Must buy" list anyway. Let's hope she has some fresh ideas because right now she's repeating themes like Eminem...

Personally, I should have downloaded it before I bought it.

i'm a little bit of a fanatic when it comes to macy i guess, but i just got the cd this past week and i like it a lot...

granted it doesn't stray from the macy gray formula too much at all (if at all)..and i guess there are no 'hits' on it...but some of the tracks ('she don't write songs about you', Jesus for a day' and 'my fondest childhood memories' come to mind first..) are great to me...

the album is fairly short in length which keeps it from getting too muddled or boring i think...(i am of the opinion that people shouldn't necessarily put 20 songs on an album just because they can..and a lot of good albums could be great albums if they were just edited down to about 10 or 11 songs...)

actually i liked the lead off single a lot as well ('when i see you') but i only saw the video for that once on vh-1 and never heard it on the radio or anything...

apparently the next single is 'she ain't right for you' which i don't really expect to make much of an impact either...seems whoever chooses macy's singles for the most part has attempted to pick another 'i try..' just as they did with 'sweet baby' from 'the id..'

right now i'm really digging it...after the new wears off it may be a different story...again i'm admittedly not very objective when it comes to macy, but as of now i actually like this one better than 'the id...'

that is subject to change of course, but for now that's my opinion...

Sure, it's enjoyable enough for fans, just lacking any new inspiration or fresh ideas. Maybe download a few tracks first though or at least don't pay over the odds.

i saw here play last night at my job and she was off the hook! i must confess that i was not really into the last album simplt becuz of the overkill with the first album. everywhere i went that had speakers she was on and all that kookiness was getting kinda dry by then.
but last night made me believe again. she ain't got the most powerful voice but she used it to the best effect. and the band was shit hot and the new sings sounded great live. and boy is she dirty.
welcome back Macy. next time tho, don't be so damn late getting to the stage.

I gave it another listen and haven't changed my opinion, her original spark has been dropping off and I don't think any of this new album can hang with the debut and maybe only one or two tracks could get on The Id. A few catchy moments here and there but overall a deflating experience...

Personally I prefer The Id over On How Life Is. I just don't think Trouble is as good as either. The only cut I'm truly satisfied with is It Aint the Money and that song that Jill Scott's production team wrote. As a whole it just doesn't move me.

I'd probably make the first two level, the debut had the career highlights and she was fresh and new to the scene while the id had perhaps more depth for grooves.

i must be the exception. After the first cd, i thought the Id was such a let down, I sold it used, did not even make a copy. This new one is back to form, and quite fresh. You can actually hear real instruments and some good lyrics. With so much trash out right now, spend $10 when it is released in the states in (July now) or get the Jap import. It is better than most of the pop stuff and most of the r&b releases. It's no R. Kelly bullshit, no b2k, no Nelly or hot producers. If you like Macy, you'll like it.

Hehehe yeah we all hear it differently, "Jesus For A Day" is probably my least favourite song of hers over course of all three albums. It's so Macy-by-numbers to me...

From what I have read elsewhere in publications, the new one reads like a a let down but I dont go by what they write most of the time anyways..a lot of people didnt get the essence of The Id and the creativity that went into it, the diversity of the songs etc. The Id seems unclassifiable at times. It has elements of soul, rock, gospel, psycodelia, pomp and circumstance etc. This is the kind of record I would make if I could make records. Now here's hoping the new one is also as "out there".

She performed Nutmeg in some movie. I don't remember which one but I remember my daughter running to tell me like something was on fire. I read several reviews that said Trouble was no good. As always, I have to let my ears be the judge. I wouldn't call it garbage, but I definitely wouldn't call it progression. shrug
