Jimi Hendrix Experience Bassist Noel Redding Dead at 57

http://www.billboard.com/...id=1886017

I just remembered, "Are You Experienced?" was the first CD I bought with my own money - I got "Sign O The Times", "Sgt. Pepper" and Eurythmics' "Savage" for Christmas when I got my first CD player as a gift...as I listen to that same copy of "Are You Experienced" on CD right now, I realize that it skips a little bit and I'm probably due for a new copy...but how strange is it that this CD, which thrived back when vinyl was king, is a 16-year-old veteran of my CD collection. I've been through a lot with this album, and it never really occurred to me how essential it's been throughout the years.

Imagine being able to say you played on the most legendary songs of Jimi Hendrix. That must have been quite a life.

Listening to the "Are You Experienced" album right now...the guy's bass was so deliciously low down and dirty in every song, you could trip on isolating his playing and listening to it all on its lonesome. An underappreciated talent and a truly sad passing...

His bass playing on 3rd Stone makes the song for me...

"Purple Haze, Jesus Saves!" R.I.P Noel. Now you and Jimi can both Kiss The Sky in Electric Lady Land.

This is VERY sad news!

From the link:

"In an interview last year with Billboard.com, Redding recounted his trials and tribulations in attempting to recover unpaid royalties for his work with Hendrix. "I should have been a plumber. That's a joke. But the thing is, plumbers get paid," he said. "But there again, I'm still playing, thank God. That's the main thing."

The fight for those royalties has been ongoing, according to Grant. "We were about to be in court over it, and we were on top," he says. "And now he will never know how it turns out. I don't know what will happen with it now. I've only been working with him for about two years. I was on a mission to right the wrongs that had been done to him.

"In working with him, I know him as a very kind, considerate man, especially given what happened to him with royalties and such," Grant adds. "He struggled at various times to reap the benefits of that part of his career ... He's now with Jimi, I guess, and they'll be comparing notes."

I agree it is sort of young do die at the age of 57 when so many people are living much longer now. Redding and John Entwistle passed at the same age, although Entwistle's death was almost a year ago. And I'm not trying to throw ice water on this thread, but on some of those Hendrix songs it was Jimi who played bass. Unfortunately, Redding, Jimi, and a ton of other recording artists were ripped off til the ends of their lives. The people who do this type of thing usually end up paying the piper though. And I don't mean just monetarily.

I don't think it's throwing ice water on the subject - after all, Noel still played the hell out of all those songs live.

I'm guessing in this situation, it was Jimi who was signed to the label, and then responsible for paying the band, much as Prince payed the Revolution and NPG from his contracts, and JK pays the Jamiroquai guys.

So was he going after the label for the royalties or was he going after the Hendrix family, who is likely the party responsible for paying him those royalties?
