I'm NOT a fan, but I have what are meant to be their best albums - "American Beauty" and "Workingman's Dead". I was told that if you love them you'll love the Dead. I didn't so I don't.

I DO, however, like live a bootleg version of "Eyes Of The World".

I have around 30 Grateful Dead CD's. American Beauty is alright but you really need to get a live CD to really expericence the Dead. They are not a very good studio band. You should get The Grateful Dead 'Europe 72'. You can find it in just about any record shop. It is one of my personal favorites. Stay away from their studio albums and stick with live shows. Any of the Dick's Picks volumes are also excellent and they are all live shows.

Aha! Thanks for the tip, Way2. I might just give the Dead another go.

American Beauty and Workingmans Dead are the two essential albums you should get. Also the best of the Arista years compilation is a good overview of their latter day material.
