This shit is about to get ugly >
From EUR LABELS GET SUPER SERIOUS WITH PIRATES: New software said to employ mild to severe methods in deterring piracy. (May. 6, 2003) *The worlds big record labels are stealthily investing in the creation of anti-pirating software being created by small software companies. When deployed, this software would sabotage the computers and the Internet connections of the people who down load "stolen sounds." "There are a lot of things you can do -- some quite nasty," said Marc Morgenstern, chief executive of software company Overpeer. The company receives support from several large media companies, it said. Vivendi's Universal Music Group, AOL Time Warner's Warner Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, Bertelsmann's BMG and EMI Group -- have all backed the development of counterpiracy programs, according to industry executives, but none would discuss details publicly. One method is a "Trojan horse" program that simply redirects users to websites where they can legitimately buy the songs they had tried to download. Another locks up a computer for a certain amount of time, minutes or hours, risking the loss of data that was not saved if the user restarts the computer. of course, wouldn't this be considered hacking or some sort of virus and therefore illegal on the part of the labels and those software developers?

Oh yeah, malicious software should boost sales.
The whole record industry has lost sight of what the market of music BUYERS now want and how they behave, and that is why less albums are sold. All you have to do is watch the behavior of the baby boomer generation and the next biggest age bracket, those born in the mid-to-late 80s, and you can see where the marketing is and is not successful. Food for thought: 1) Chance to see artists tour? What about who goes to concerts the most & who pays for the ticket? what do they expect? Think of what tours have been most successful recently. 2) Successful imagery of Avril Lavigne vs. Successful imagery of Norah Jones 3) Novelty of the music video worn off on new generation? 4) Home Taping (MP3s) sound great to the majority of non-audiophile buyers because the price is right.

YEP. They (the industry) are REALLY tripping in taking this scapegoating of piracy as far as they are. Politicians running the labels these days? If they do that, I can almost guarentee every hacker in the known world will DESTROY these company's sites, systems, etc. in retaliation. The eye-for-an-eye mentality would be in effect BIG TIME! You attack everyday consumers and they WILL attack back. This is all an attempt to get a stronghold on the $$$. I download music and I still buy CDs. I just don't buy CDs that don't have at least 3 good songs on them. The message is simple: STOP distributing bullshit CDs. If labels would listen, all would be well...but NO!!! They wanna battle. Let the games begin, then.
