‘Michael’ Over the Moon With Record $97M U.S. Opening, $219M Globally by Pamela McClintock • April 27, 2026 • The Hollywood Reporter You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Was absolutely incredible in IMAX. As noted ad nauseum at this point, there was hardly anything hard hitting or controversial discussed about the man - just an artistic highlights sweep from 6-year-old Michael through the start of the Bad tour. Jaafar's dancing (and full metamorphosis into his uncle) was both spectacular and magnificant, and it was so up-close, with no room for cut screens or doubles.

I don't have any issues with the movie not delving into the allegations and all that stuff. It only covers the first half of his career so I wouldn't expect it to feature that stuff. Given that his family are producers on the movie I was expecting it to be even more watered down so I was surprised by the scenes of Joseph beating the kids and stuff. I still think they let him off the hook for how much of a scumbag he was but still, credit where it's due. Overall I think it's a good movie. It could have done with being another 30 minutes longer because it feels like a lot of stuff is left out just so the movie can get back to the performances. But the performances are genuinely brilliant and both actors playing Michael Jackson deserve huge credit. It's not going to receive any nominations at next year's Oscars but it should. Jaafar and Colman Domingo absolutely give performances worthy of at least a nomination. There will inevitably be a part 2 and I'd expect that to go deeper into the controversial side of Michael Jackson (well, as deep as they can legally go) but I have to admit that I'm far less interested in that.

Yeah not even mentioning Janet Jackson was a bit weird. I get that she wanted no part of it and didn't want to be featured but surely they could have name checked her or just said something like "oh, Janet is out of town at the moment" or something to explain her absence. And who knows, maybe they did have something like that in one of the scenes that were cut?

I walked away thinking it was cool in terms of watching a highlight reel of key performances even though important events that led to those moments were left out (like MJ not wanting to be in Motown 25, Berry Gordy convincing him, MJ agreeing to it with the caveat that he gets a solo performance). Them performing Never Can Say Goodbye before they got the Motown deal was weird lol It was cool, but I’d rather see MJs real videos/performances and The Jacksons: An American Dream is better if you’re looking for a more nuanced insight into the lives of MJ and his family.

Hearing the music and seeing the concert footage in IMAX really makes it special, Im not sure if i would have felt the same watching it at home.

I enjoyed it a lot, it was sometimes magic.
As a movie it has some flaws i think, like people alrerady said, it didn't mention Janet and Diana Ross. In also didnt like they started all of a sudden with Bad, I would have loved to see something about the poces of making Bad. There was no buying Neverland, no We are the world.
But....it was the MJ I love to see, you `can really enjoy the madness of the 80's.
