Soul Legend D’Angelo Passes Away After Private Battle With Pancreatic Cancer R&B and soul legend D’Angelo has passed away following a private battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 51.
Born Michael Eugene Archer in Richmond, Virginia, D’Angelo changed the sound of modern soul music with his timeless mix of gospel, funk, jazz, and hip-hop influences. His debut album Brown Sugar (1995) helped usher in the neo-soul movement of the 1990s, sitting alongside artists like Erykah Badu, Maxwell, and Lauryn Hill in redefining what R&B could be. The album sold over two million copies and delivered instant classics such as “Lady,” “Cruisin’,” and the title track “Brown Sugar,” solidifying D’Angelo’s place in music history https://balleralert.com/p...ic-cancer/ [Edited 10/14/25 16:13pm] Time keeps on slipping into the future...

I only discovered his music in the last couple of years. I think the first time I heard him sing was in the game Red Dead Redemption 2, where he had a song on the soundtrack. From there I kind of worked backwards and started with Black Messiah before going to Voodoo and finally Brown Sugar. Each album absolutely floored me. Amazing records. I said on here in another thread a few days ago that very few artists could hold a candle to Prince when it comes to ballads but D'Angelo was definitely one who could. I'm absolutely gutted for his family and friends, especially his children. One of whom recently lost their mother too. So I'm sure it's a tough time for all involved. Perhaps selfishly I also mourn the loss of any future music we may have gotten from him. I've read that he was working on a 4th album and I hope we get some of his unreleased recordings when the time is right.

I've seen him live three times over the years. His Voodoo show (which I witnessed in Hamburg in 2000) is one of the best concerts of my life. I thank him for everything he's created. NPG Radio:

I'm devastated. I'm a massive fan. I don't think we even scratched the surface of talent this dude had. Rest in Peace brother...you will definitely be remembered.

RIP... I will always be grateful for his homage to Prince on The Tonight Show. His own repertoire is probably the best of the New Soul era, IMO, of course.

Gutted. His band were THE FUNKIEST live. I'll always remember him hi-fiving my brother & tipping his hat to me (he noticed I was singing along to The Charade) at the Odeon in London. It's selfish, but I hope he left one or two unreleased tracks. "Had to get off the boat so I could walk on water..."

Exactly Like I get the praise for what he did I love his stuff But I always thought his best was still to come. A big loss really. Should have been able to make much more music

And considering his first album was an all time great, that just goes to show how much I think of Black Messiah. I literally googled "D'Angelo new album" 2 days ago to see if there had been any news on his next project. And I found news that he had been working on several new songs and I was elated. Then to get this news today is devastating.

Agree with the bold and couldn't say it better. I was at the Black Messiah tour (word to Jesse Johnson on guitar in D's band!) and that was one of the best shows I've seen in the 2000s.

Devastated. He was an amazing artist. His son Michael Jr lost both parents in the same year. That cancer usually isn't discovered until stage 4 after it already spread
