The Best New Jack Swing Playlist

I was listening to Bobby Brown earlier and thought how popular NJS was from the mid-80s well into the 90s.

Then I thought - why not build a great playlist of NJS songs. Here's some of my starters. Obviously not everything is a Top 10 hit, ya know? These are in no order.

I'm interested to hear your offerings.

Babyface - My Kinda Girl

Bell Biv Devoe - Do Me

Bell Biv Devoe - Poison

Bobby Brown - Every Little Step

Bobby Brown - On Our Own

Boyz II Men - Motownphilly

Chuckii Booker - Games

Color Me Badd - I Wanna Sex You Up

Damian Dame - Exclusivity

Full Force - Alice, I Want You Just For Me

Some ELITE knowledge of NJS tracks on here! I'd personally add the Teddy Riley remix of "Don't Wanna Fall In Love" by Jane Child. IIRC, that was the remix that saved his career/got him the gig to do the Dangerous album for Michael.

How was his career in trouble at that point? Jane's song was 1990. He was coming off the heels of Bobby Brown et al and that was the end of the 80s. Dangerous was recorded from 1989-1991, up to a month before its release. It got him the gig, but I don't get how his career was in trouble while still on the "My Prerogative" wave.

I did have a little help on some of the tracks. These aren't off the top of my head. I knew about Full Force's early adaptation of the sound. Some I dug around to find, and some of those I never knew. NJS was one big haze back then. Some songs blended into others (ie: they were copying rather than doing it their own way).

Teddy's remix of Jane's song is really good. I'd listen to either. But those fat synths in the original are just everything.

Every day when I awake, the greatest of joys is mine: that of being ME.
