I don't care whether you like Taylor Swift or not.

This post is about her finally getting ownership of the master from her first six albums. This, after scumbag Scooter Braun sold them out from under her (not giving her a chance to buy them first) to another company.

In part, the article says (with shade clearly embedded):

“Contrary to a previous false report, there was no outside party who ‘encouraged’ this sale. All rightful credit for this opportunity should go to the partners at Shamrock Capital and Taylor’s Nashville-based management team only,” the source says. “Taylor now owns all of her music, and this moment finally happened in spite of Scooter Braun, not because of him.”

While I'm not a fan of her music per se, I respect her talent and the fact that she has the foresight to own her music. She's learned something whether it was from Prince or otherwise. So good on her.

We're not rooting only for our favorite artists to own their music. We root for the freedom of artistry and the right to make a living off that free and clear of every goddamn middleman trying to get a finger in the pie.

Good for her. Having 2 daughters that used to call themselves Swifties I have a good amount of respect and appreciation for her work and she should own it.

I followed this a bit back then a little bit, because I was curious if she was a smart one who maybe learned from Prince's mistakes, but it was reporteed back then that Scooter Braun just biougfht the rights from her dumbass father, so her father is to blame for this thing. Braun wanted to sell it to Taylor Swift for a reasonable amount, but she chose to badmouth him in the media instead of negociating a deal. She and her father are full of shit

I swear I heard $300,000,000 the other day. CBS Mornings did a detailed but not long report on it. That number sounds fair for six albums.

I wonder though - when Prince got his masters back, part of the deal was that he would exclusively give the license to print and distribute to Warner Bros. That's why the newer albums say "NPG Records, exclusive license to Warner Bros. Records." He's now getting paid by WB to put those albums out.

So I wonder if Taylor has a similar agreement, or she just bought 'em straight out to shop them out where she wants for future pressings. Either way, glad for her.

She did make money but she's the it-girl right now.

She partly did that tour in such a big way, for the length it was, to make money to buy those masters back. She had a plan and it worked.

I don't know why Prince albums never sold that much, really. Not compared to anyone else on the radio at the time. Big attention to the singles and videos, but what was in between never quite ticked the boxes with the average consumer.

Perhaps. But, he was just starting to get his masters by the law of reversion. He may have worn them down, but how? The deal that got WB to give them to him was the exclusive licensing. You don't see Rhino, Sony, or anyone else suddenly putting out Prince albums after 2016. That is what helped seal the deal, IMO.

His catalog is vaulable, so for him to wear them down... he didn't have that power or influence. He made a new deal with the devil.
