New to you "older" records from musical artists...

What are new discoveries you've made from "older" records from musical artists that have been around for...a while? lol I went to see Warren Haynes last weekend--I have seen him with Gov't Mule and hosting tribute concerts for artists like The Band but this was the first time I saw him with his own band and he did not disappoint. He's still a great musician on guitar and the Allman Brothers influence is still apparent as well as R&B and jazz when performing live. He even played a cover of "What Is Hip," which Prince covered. I picked up the "Man in Motion" LP at the concert and I gotta say I love it. I like the new one "Million Voices Whisper" also but feeling partial to "Man in Motion." cool

Terence Trent D'Arby's Wildcard

Ok, so there's at least half the album that I don't like but there are still several really good songs on there. I'm actually addicted to Designated Fool.

I'm not completely unfamiliar with the guy. I've actually listened to one of his albums quite a bit. The Hardline album or whatever it's called. That was another one where I liked about half the songs. Based on that, I did try to get into some of his other albums afterwards but literally didn't find one song I liked on any of the ones I listened to so I completely checked out of the rest. Then, randomly, I was scrolling through YouTube and it was recommending me a live performance from the Jay Leno show so I gave it a listen and was hooked instantly. Checked out the rest of the album and yeah, just like his first album, I liked some songs and disliked others. But the ones I like, I REALLY like. I just wish he was more consistent. Or, to put it another way, I wish he was more consistent in doing the type of songs I like. Because when he nails it, he really fucking nails it.

Interesting. I have never discussed Wildcard with anyone. I have a lot of time for the hardline according to.., symphony or damn , vibrator and think neither fish nor flesh (his other earlier albums), but feel that Wildcard is the last 'proper' album he did. Here the rot is setting in, as it seems he half bakes a lot of songs that have good ideas but don't execute all the way. Prince with songs I liked or not did not have songs that lacked something. I put this down to a greater studio mastery. The last couple of decades I could find nothing in TTD (or Sananda Maitreya as he is called now - did the Prince name change).

For me the best songs on Wild Card are My dark places, Suga free, drivin me crazy, shalom, o divina, girl, and you are right about designated fool (lively distinctive TTD vocals and delicious wah wah guitar).

Sign your name from the Hardline according to has always been a top tier song for me - and I enjoy his cover of who's loving you.

Neither fish nor flesh has roly poly and to know someone deeply is to know someone softly.

Symphony or damn has she kissed me there, and let her down easy (another one of my all time faves.

If for some reason you haven't caught the vibrator album, I recommend it. A very Prince album (it even had ineresting b sides). We don't have much time together is one of my favourites from that album. https://www.youtube.com/w...p;index=12

A lot of stuff can fall between the cracks, so nothing is better than falling into a youtube or spotify rabbit hole of albums you have never heard before. In a classic rock bent I have been checking out Traffic, Blind Faith, Allen Parsons Project, picked up and then left Motley Crue, deeper diving into Aerosmith, and just generally listening to stuff that people discuss. Listening to some more NIN, and in a bit of brand new shiny album releases, I have listened to the latest Ghost album.

I honestly don't remember the names of the albums I tried to get into but couldn't. It was a while ago. I'm pretty sure Fish Nor Flesh was one and there was another, more recent album I tried to listen to but every song just sounded the same to me and I just didn't get it. Vibrator doesn't sound familiar to me and I feel if I'd heard it I'd probably recognise that name lol . So I might check that one out.

As for Wildcard, Designated Fool (I actually LOVE this song), Sugar Free, Inner Scream and SRR-636 are my go to songs

TTD had that "run", too:
'The Hardline According to...'
'Niether Fish Nor Flesh'
'Symphony Or Damn' (my personal fave)
'Vibrator (batteries included)'

"Supermodel Sandwich (With Cheese)" is extra slinky eek

If you say 'Wildcard' is good, i will take your word and buy it tomorrow!!!
I missed TTD after those albums listed above!

I was actuallly referring to a specific TTD line, but if you didn't get it, then you didn't get it.

I actually missed every album of his after Hardline when they were released. The only thing I remember was seeing videos for She Kissed Me which didn't really register with me. Coincidentally, it was that same Leno performance (I saw it in real time though) of Designated Fool that made me check out Wildcard and his back catalogue. I liked most of Wildcard and a couple of tracks on most of his albums up to that time. I haven't been able to get into anything he did after that though. Maybe that says more about me than his music- I don't know.

I'm a big Stevie Nicks fan from even before I heard of Prince and I'm enjoying these two albums I never thought would be on vinyl. The sound is a little wonky on a couple of songs but that may be my old record player. lol cool
