I heard this new song by Krystle Warren and the Faculty called "Without U", and my first thought was that it sounded an awful lot like Prince in slow-jam mode. Then, listening more closely, I realized that the music and lyrics contained many deliberate nods to Prince songs both well-known and obscure. After a couple more listens, I found myself more and more impressed by the level of thought, care, and craft that went into this song, even if the slow ballads were never my favorite Prince songs. Something like this could come off as cheesy and hokey, but it's really well-done.
