Yacht Rock: A DOCKumentary - MAX

I watched Yacht Rock: A DOCKumentary on MAX last night. It was a well woven narrative about the soft-rock of the late 70s and early 80s, then how it ended, and what happened to a lot of those guys.

I'm glad they noted how Robbie Dupree flat out lifted Michael McDonald's sound for things like "Steal Away."

There was a point made about people distancing themselves from Christopher Cross, yet "Sailing" is one of the most penultimate songs - that actually has a sailing (yacht) theme - in yacht rock.

A lot of cool full circle moments in it. Questlove offers great insight into the genre, as well as those who played the music.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I missed the start but saw it recently. Steely Dan, Christopher Cross etc isn't my thing, but I found myself enjoying the documentary. I like these type of music features and felt the people talking were passionate and knowledgeable - Questlove is just a good sound bite. As I didn't know that much about the genre I learnt things. It is interesting how the bands/acts praised the black acts that inspired them, and in return black acts spoke praise for them when they heard them.

I did this recently - I would encourage you to go through Steely Dan's catalog. It's not that big. Take one record at a time, listen and absorb it. It's quality stuff front to back.

Excellent observations! Finding new music is always energizing, particularly when it has such a deep history and is praised by a variety of musicians. It's definitely worth checking out Steely Dan's distinctive sound. I will also need to peruse their catalog!

Really impressed with the acting and expressions of the characters. The film succeeded in capturing the audience's emotions well.
