Sly Stone Memoir Wanted to comment on an earlier thread about this but it seems locked so I'm starting a new one. Family gifted this to me for Christmas and I finally read and finished it (not too long and deep of a read)... 1.) Not a bad bio, has some interesting anecdotes and name-drops, but very little about the actual music. 2.) Great as a companion piece to the Oral History that came out some years back. Sly doesn't really dispute that stuff so much as he offers "his side" of the stories. 3.) Made me really go back into the music this week, especially the rarities and alternate versions that you can find on YouTube. 4.) Lastly, hate to admit it, but Sly is still the MF'ing man despite everything. Even in some of the most foulest instances in the book, I still found myself rooting for Sly by the end and, all of the years later, appreciating the genius of his stuff (even when he was singing/performing high as hell). | |
