Dolly Parton - Rockstar (OUT NOW)

Well, the album is on streaming. I'm sure every other fanatic is going to have something to say about "Purple Rain." It's one of the songs she doesn't duet on; of course the originator isn't here to play or sing on it. sad

I've not gotten through all the album, but I like most of the covers I've heard. I have to explore more.

Anyone else listened yet?

Not all the way through yet, those first two tracks on the record (originals) are great, some may think the lyrics to "World On Fire" are corny but for these times we need a bit of that middle ground as opposed to what we have now, Dolly is cool like that because she is old school, middle of the country, does alot for many people, and sad to say most people of younger generations as soon as they hear a person is from middle america or a red state they assume all the "isms" on all, how odd that the generation of inclusion is about "your this or that". But back to the record, I have heard the opening two and the few singles that were released prior especially with Paul and Ringo, major respect to Dolly, one of the few greats from a better time we have left.

Yeah I mean she did a great job with this record, I mean people forget these artists are in their later years, dolly is 78 I believe and then you have the Stones are 80+ and the Beatles 82 etc... so I am glad they are here and doing good stuff and some great stuff, shit this is the first STONES album I have been able to listen to straight through mulitple times in forty years. So is it Prince's Purple Rain, no I mean he is gone and who knows if he would have even allowed this if he was here and sorry it would be said if he stood in her way, but I must say all in all she did everything here justice, take it for what it is people, relax its just a damn song.

Her Purple Rain cover is a good - It is clearly Dolly and treats the song with respect without just seeking to mimic or needless change the original

Looks like it's a number one album for her. Well deserved.

Number 3 on the top 200 debut. But number one in album sales, which to me is the only chart, streaming means nothing to me, its whos buying.

I think that's the best cover of Purple Rain I've ever heard. It's a fine album start to finish too. Congrats to Dolly for making it in to my music collection at long last. smile

I've sorta sat on my thoughts about the cover. I've long said I don't think anyone should cover that song. Everyone and their goats covered it when he died. Bruce, The Chicks, everyone. I hated every single one of them. Find another fucking song. Do a cool cover of "When Doves Cry" or something. But damn it, leave "Purple Rain" to the guy who owned it front to back.

That said, I don't mind Dolly's cover. She did keep to the original idea, and let a huge guitar solo come into it instead of 7"-ing it. It felt like a true tribute to him.

Yeah I was on that run too, but I let it go mainly because of how this was done, and also her respect for all the songs she was doing and also her as a person. I know those things may not come into play for all people but I do like when someone is covering someone they have an understanding of. That being ssaid its ridiculous that already people start their usual complaints when someone does a duet with someone they don't like politically, in this case Kid Rock, people just need to get over themselves already, cool, you don't like his politics lets move on and live life. So much better when people had no where to voice an opinion, the downside of Social Media, everyone has a voice.

Good cover of Purple Rain (and no, I don't think that it shouldn't be covered by others.)
