Newbie to Rick James music So after watching the tales from the tour bus episodes about Rick James and his rivalry with Prince.I've decided to get into Rick's music
I already knew of "give it to me baby" and "super freak" but what prompted me to getting a cd of his is after I watched the music video for "Glow" on YouTube for the first time. What a awesome and fun song So I'm a extreme newbie when it comes to Rick's music What are the best albums and songs by Rick James? Also this is the "definitive collection" but is it really? Idk how prolific Rick was but Prince's hits /very best of cd's certainly isn't the best of what he had to offer Is this the case with Rick as well? Here is the CD I have [Edited 7/1/23 11:59am] [Edited 7/1/23 12:00pm] [Edited 7/1/23 12:03pm]

If you're getting into Rick James you absolutely have to get into Teena Marie. I know what I'm about to say may be controversial but in my opinion, she was better than Rick James. And for that matter, I think she's better than Prince too.

I like the full band sound of the "Glow" album, the title track is horrilbe though.
"The Flag" is interesting as it chases the minni sound production wise (which "Glow" doesn't). A few of the songs on their could pass off as The Time songs. Both "Glow" and "The Flag" have grown on me somewhat, despite the reputation of them both being poor. At least production wise he was still interestng at that time.
The 2 disc "Bustin' out" looks the best comp I feel. I even liked a few of the new tracks on it, though to the average James fan they are mainly awful attempts at New Jack.
"Street Songs" is his best album IMO.

Yeah, Teena Marie could be a tad too bombastic. So could Rick. Prince definitely could smooth and slow it down best out of the three of them.

Rick James was not nearly as prolific as the other superstars of his era because he was a crack-head and coke fiend...period

Am I correct to take my mom's revelation that she had a big Rick James poster hanging over her bed as a girl as explanation why she wasn't much of a Prince fan?
