Maxwell's still touring...

Maxwell, my late friend's favorite singer, is performing with the local symphony. This should be interesting...

It's gotta be some bitter irony that all the 90s supposed-heirs to the Prince throne like Maxwell and D'Angelo are serial procrastinators who average like one album every 10-15 years.

Yeah, i've thought about that before. If there were ever two heirs to a thone of soul and R&B that actually didn't sound like they'd never drank a drop of water in their lives, it's Maxwell and D'Angelo.

D reminds me of Jesse Johnson. They don't have bad attitudes, but they certainly don't go headlong into being public with their music, and are.... well, just too cool for school. They're both great dudes, but they are the troubled soul types. Every group has one. Jesse is it for The Time. I'm not totally sure why either of them are that way.

With D, I just don't get it. I'm sure something happened in his life that maybe throttled his - either - creativity or output. Maybe the lack of a record contract. But man, you make "untitled" then just up and disappear like a fart in the wind? ...the fuck?!

As far as Maxwell, I tend to believe - and I could be wrong - that he just gets in his own way too much. He's either taking shit way too far, too seriously, he's too artsy, whatever. It's not like he's exactly saturating the market.

For me, and mayb eonly me, I felt like BLACK and SUMMER'S was a step down from any of his previous material. I liked the change on NOW, little new, little old. But man, BSn feels subpar. Not horrible, just not MAXWELL like we know him.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I liked Black and Summer (if I remember correctly lol). They came and went. I can do with or without Night. It might say more about me at this point in my life than it does the quality of the music though.

I honestly didn't think she was releasing music at all. After "Criminal" and "Fast as I Can," I never heard a peep out of her.

I've never ever seen anyone quite like D and his reaction/relationship w fame vs his religious upbringing. It is a real thing and it simply prevents the man from going all in on the music thing. It is like he loves the music making part..........and hates everything that goes along with it. If ever want 2 get a glimpse into his psyche, watch is documentary The Devils Pie.

Fiona released an album during the pandemic in 2020. That gave her the excuse not to tour. Five albums only since the 90s.🤬Maxwell also only 5 albums and D'Angelo only 3.

That's really interesting! Fiona Apple is also going to appear here this fall. I like her but not for those ticket prices. I'm more interested in Maxwell since that was the singer my late friend raved about and I heard some of his music. D'Angelo--I'm sorry--wanted to like him but he sounds like he's singing underwater to me and I can't understand the lyrics. What I heard of Maxwell makes me want to hear him, even backed with a symphony. wink

I have heard many rave about D'Angelo. I have never understood the hype. I never understood all the Voodoo hype and Black Messiah, to me, was a serious let down. When i saw him on SNL, he looked clumsy....you just know the guy wants to be Prince but, he looked so bad twirling around....

Anyway, I do think his tribute to Prince where he did Sometimes It Snows ...couldn't finish the line becoming overcome by emotion...it was one of the best i've ever seen. It was from the heart..no doubt.

DUDE wtf. Was all spazzin' for live Fiona.

Lana del Torta isn't fit to tune a key on Fiona's piano.

That's odd, her records do get a certain amount of press/notice every couple years. Not a lot, but, she gets Grammy chatter, light social media references, critic namechecks, etc. Her material is not designed as hits or singles anymore.

She's kinda like Prince where she had the where-are-they-now pop hits decades ago that actually completely undermine her true embodiment as a pure artist.

You would do yourself a favor to check out a complete album of hers, she's quite incredible, and always evolves her art. Her first LP Tidal is kind of rudimentary (but good) pop/soul type songs, but starting with When the Pawn Hits... (one of like, my top 2 albums ever, easily, one of the greatest albums of all time, no doubt whatsoever) she brings it 100% and does not let up.

Even the mumble vocals?

Mumble rap haters gotta at least break off some scorn for D'Angelo being the original mumbler on record. His vocals all are like mumbly mushmouth muttering through a tube sock. His arrangements/tempos are kinda mumbly, too. The whole package is very ambien.

I hear ya but I think D does that mumble on purpose. Its a part of his style.
