New Funk? Recommendations Please!

Given that this is a Prince site, I assume that most of you like funk music. Personally, I was never really interested in that genre until relatively recently but when I go in, I go ALL in. So the last year has been full of Prince, Rick James, George Clinton, Bootsy Collins and Teena Marie. I haven't quite moved on to the likes of Sly Stone or James Brown yet but they're both on the list.

But all those acts listed above are, it's safe to say, past their prime. Or sadly not around these days. But that doesn't mean that the genre is gone. There are plenty of people out there doing what they can to keep the funk alive. The problem is finding them. I've already been introduced to the likes of Mayer Hawthorne and Chromeo. But I'm always open to suggestions and I figure you guys are probably the best people to ask for recommendations from.

But just to show that I'm not all about taking, I'm here to give too. So here's a link (I hope I did it right) to a brand new song from Chromeo. It's been living in my head rent free for the last week so I hope you enjoy it too.

Did you ever listen to Marcus Machado's 2021 album Aquarius Purple? Hard to define what funk is sometimes, but it's a good recommendation (e.g. "Table Dance").

Didn't know Chromeo had some new work, thanks for the heads up! I've been a fan since their first album because I love the humor they bring to the groove.

Funk obsessed for decades, my first note is to just stop everything and listen to the man who invented the genre, James Brown. Everybody has a favorite era but I say start at the beginning and at some point get to the album "Love, Power, Peace: Live at the Olympia, Paris, 1971" which features a very young, Bootsy Collins with his brother Catfish on guitar.

Funk had a revival in the early 2000's and a lot of great bands came out around the world. Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings were a personal favorite and have 7 studo albums. While she and the band were funky, they were more of a soul band.

I've recently discovered a handful of really great British funk bands that are still doing it well like The New Mastersounds. Then you got Osaka Monaurail who have been rocking a complete James Brown vibe since 1992 and they're from Japan.

Jazz Funk is another genre that is a favorite of mine with Herbie Hancock & the Headhunters being a good place to start listening.

This is a very vast and deep topic so I'm going to stop rambling now, hope this gives you a little to think about.

James Brown's catalog seems like a daunting task. I will get around to it but I was planning on taking a break from the "old" music and seeking out some of the newer stuff in the meantime. I had just discovered Stargard too so I plan on checking out those first when I eventually get back to the older stuff.

I had heard a Boulevards song a couple of years ago and couldn't remember his (or the song's) name until you mentioned him just now. I found the song too. It was called "Steady". Great song so I'll definitely check out more of him.

Stretch out and listen to the Venezuelan band via NYC (last time I checked) Los Amigos Invisibles. Their styles run the gamut of Afro-Caribbean, rock, pop, soul, and Indigenous folk ramblings, and they definitely get on the one on their album Arepa 3000.
