RIP Bobby Caldwell

A couple of weeks ago I don't think I had ever heard of Bobby Caldwell. But I've been going down several musical rabbit holes of late and one of them was Bobby Caldwell. Earlier today, while googling him to look for more of his music, I see a report that he had died. I'm not sure how well known he was. Like I said, I had never heard of him. But in light of his death, I would recommend his music to anyone who may not be familiar with him.

I still see people, younger, discovering that Bobby Caldwell is white and soulful as hell. RIP man, you did us proud.

RIP Bobby Caldwell.

He was always pretty big/known in the states, at least "What You Won't Do for Love" is one of those timeless 70s hits that's transcended successive generations and has been quoted in many R&B staples. A gateway into YouTube reaction videos, it's quite entertaining to see people's reaction to the music video when the camera pans back and he comes out of the shadow.

"Open Your Eyes" from his Cat in the Hat album was sampled prominently Common's "The Light" produced by J. Dilla, a big "college radio"-type hit in the early 00s, that song is probably moderately well-known or at least recognizable in the US as a result as well.

That's kind of interesting. It never even occurred to me that me might NOT be white. I just assumed he was. Michael McDonald, on the other hand...

I’ve never listened to him aside from the big hit, which at this point is just part of my dna, but I very recently checked out Bobby Caldwell’s “Cool Uncle” from 2015 and am loving it. It’s both an homage to his most popular sound and a really solid album of melodic, jazzy R&B. Simply wonderful.

I went for most of my earlier years and didn't know he was white. I forget when I realized it was a white dude singing that song.

Michael McDonald is just soulful in general.

Whenever I hear What You Won't Do For Love it always take me back to middle school

being snowed in South Carolina when we had harsh winters in 1978 and you had nothing to

do but play board games or watch tv. This is one of those songs you never tire of hearing.

For those that don't know Common sampled Bobby's Open Your Eyes for his signature hit The Light.

RIP

Common's singles tend crest just below the Top 40. "The Light" went to #44 and I suppose you are right because that's when I was in college and heard it all the time.

Also "Sky's The Limit" by The Notorious B.I.G. may have had 112 singing the chorus from D-Train's "Keep On", but all the music on the track was Bobby Caldwell's "My Flame", from the album What You Won't Do For Love. https://www.youtube.com/w...hK6IgvZ0CY

Got a few of his solo albums but I know him more for writing for others like "Next time I fall (in love) for Peter Cetera and Amy Grant. His own version is melancholic and wistful.
