Chaka Khan is ruffling a few feathers again

[(Exclusive) Chaka Khan Revives Mary J. Blige Feud

(Exclusive) Chaka Khan Revives Mary J. Blige Feud, Dunks on Adele and Mariah Carey

Only Aretha Franklin survived the wrath of Khan after the music legend learned of her (objectively great) placement on a list of all time great singers

It’s a banner year for the so-called Queen of Funk, Chaka Khan, as 2023 marks 50 years in the music business, and on March 23, she’ll celebrate her 70th birthday. Ahead of that, she had some words for the editors at Rolling Stone regarding one Mary J. Blige.

On New Year’s Day, in what seemed an early birthday gift for the “I’m Every Woman” singer, Rolling Stone awarded Khan a high perch on its “The 200 Greatest Singers of All Time” list, putting her at #29—a great neighborhood, it would seem, with David Bowie three positions behind and Paul McCartney just three ahead and Khan leaving such icons as Diana Ross (#87), Janice Joplin (#78), Tina Turner (#55) and Mick Jagger (#52) in the dust. This is not to mention Celine Dion, whose snub caused the Canadian chanteuse’s fans to take to the streets and picket the magazine’s Manhattan offices.

In the latest episode of The Originals, the award-winning podcast from Los Angeles, Khan—who may be entitled to be henceforth also known as the “Queen of Candor”—reveals her personal thoughts on Rolling Stone’s list. Apparently, the very existence of the magazine’s list was unknown to the legendary singer before the podcast’s host, Andrew Goldman, congratulated her on being included.

“I didn’t even know what the hell you were talking about, so obviously this don’t mean a great deal to me,” she told him. “These people don’t quantify or validate me in any way.”

Nevertheless, Khan was curious to hear who else appeared in the top 200. Some of Rolling Stone’s decisions struck her as apt, like granting Aretha Franklin the top spot (“As she fucking should be”) and including Joan Baez on the bubble, at #189 (“let’s be honest, the bitch cannot sing. Now, she was a good writer.”) In granting Mariah Carey the #5 spot, however, Khan suspects the kind of industry chicanery that has long dogged the singer (“That must be payola or some shit like that.”).

It was Adele’s inclusion, a few spaces ahead of Khan at #22, that brought on a momentary existential crisis. (“Okay, I quit.”) However, nothing seemed to prepare Khan for the news that longtime frenemy Mary J. Blige appears on the list just ahead of her, at #25. Khan remarked on Rolling Stone’s editors. “They are blind as a motherfucking bat! They need hearing aids…These must be the children of Helen Keller!”

The history: Though decades ago in concert, Khan had been known to introduce the 1975 Rufus ballad, “Sweet Thing” as “the song Mary J. Blige fucked up” after the “queen of hip-hop soul” covered the song for her 1992 debut album. The pair appeared to have been enjoying a long détente, and Blige even sang on Khan’s 2007 song, “Funk This.” Now thanks to Rolling Stone, that truce may have run its course.

To the Rolling Stone editor who put Blige before Khan: Welcome to Chaka’s special s-list. Here you’ll join Ariana Grande, who failed to appear in in the same studio as Khan to record their duet “Nobody” for the 2019 Charlie’s Angels soundtrack, a snub that still stings. Khan explained: “I would never have somebody come sing on my motherfucking project without me knowing them.”

Blige even sang on Khan's 2007 song "Funk This"

I love Chaka but fame/ego must make you a little nutty

“These people don’t quantify or validate me in any way.”
and then proceeds to get a little emotional about the list of other artists in relation to her placement.

Rolling Stone's lists mean nothing and seem to be an attempt to keep them relevant when they haven't been in decades.

I love Chaka as well as the next one but I don't know.

I mean is that the go-to for older singers now?

I think I'm getting soft in my old age but I'm not feeling it.

And with her spotty live track record...

But unlike Stephanie Mills who spoke her true feelings about Beyonce, Chaka was really careful about what she said about Beyonce being ranked so far above her. hmmm Stephanie Mills was like here is my opinion about Beyonce and I don't give a f if anyone takes issue with it. It's my opinion! lol

That list is just opinion and I'm surprised Chaka ranked as high as she did because I've seen a lot of these types of list where Chaka was ranked a lot lower or didn't appear on the list at all. I love Chaka, she is my musical mother. But she has exhibited some strange behavior over the past several years. People still accuse her of being under the influence. I have no idea whether she is or not. But things like this interview, her Verzuz performance, her rendition of the national anthem a couple years ago and some other recent performances where she appeared lethargic don't exactly put her in a good light.

I can look at this in two ways.

On the one hand,Chaka has always been the type of woman who speaks her mind biggrin it's one of the reasons we love her so much. She tells it like it is! It's what makes her interviews so much fun to read.

On the other hand....you gotta feel bad for some of these ladies.A few of them were clearly inspired by Chaka and they love her.Can you imagine how Mary J. Blige must feel after reading these comments? Your childhood idol talking shit about you?! nuts

Chaka Khan apologises for...rs’ list

Chaka Khan apologises for strong comments on Rolling Stone’s ‘greatest singers’ list

“Recently, I was asked about a list of the ‘greatest singers of all time’ and instead of questioning the need for such a list, I was pitted against other artists and I took the bait,” her apology begins.

“As artists, we are unfairly put into ‘boxes’, ‘categories’ or on ‘lists.’ Being an artist or musician is not a competition. It’s a gift, for which I am truly grateful.

“It was not my intention to cause pain or upset anyone. To anyone that felt this way, I sincerely apologise.”

The 69-year-old singer ended her message by thanking those who have shown her love and support.

Mariah too. Chaka did an interview a few years ago. The person interviewing her mentioned to Mariah the interview with Chaka and Mariah was really excited because C.K. is one of her idols. Chaka called Mariah "my baby" so I was kinda shocked at her words against Mariah and Mary.

She has been promising a new album every year for the past couple decades and delivered three times. So I take her promises with a grain of salt unless I have an exact release date. She got to come up with something better than "Hello Happiness" which was her first album that failed to chart.

Yeah it's kind of like Stevie. Wouldn't it be a dream to see them do a duet album?

Realistically at this point in their careers they me better off just doing like Will Downing

and just realease singles or an EP because the industry is so fickle these days.

Why put money into an album unless it's in their heart and they might not get the promotion

or airplay to get a proper return? I remember a pop artist I believe Sheryl Crow IIRC who

menitoned this a few years back.

I totally agree.Old school artists should, every so often, just release an EP containing a few tracks.A little treat for their fans. What's the point in releasing a full album? We know it's not gonna get alot of promotion. The singles won't get played on the radio. Why go through all that hard work for nothing? Stevie Nicks expressed this same point of view, when explaining why there probably won't ever be another Fleetwood Mac album.

Speaking of Will Downing I am amazed by his catalog. I believe his first album was released around 1987 or 1988 and despite not being a big seller he has released almost two dozen albums, most of which were full length albums. Many of his contemporaries both male and female who were bigger sellers never managed to release that many albums. Same with Maysa. She doesnt have as many albums as Will but has managed to release more albums than other folks who were more successful.

Chaka(whom an "industry aqquantance" said was the hold up to a certain Prince(r.i.p.) documentary because of her foggy memory) I hope has dealt with her "issues". I would hate to see anything bad happen to one of my favorite female singers.

BTW: I LOVE her new single "Woman Like Me" that was played in rotation on Stevie Wonder's Radio station KJLH in the beautiful "LAnD Of MANY StARs WiTh oNlY OnE Mo0N".

Lol! Chaka has been dealing with foggy memory for several decades. Part of the reason her biography was delayed was because she had very little recollection of the 70s and the 80s werent much better. When the book was finally released she relied heavily on David Nathan's book as far as the 70s and she glossed over much of the 80s.

Its always funny to speak your mind and then issue an apology in the next breath. I mean these "lists" are nonsense anyway, especially now when you have "wokesters" working at the magazines and they want to be all inclusive and recognize and make themselves look morally over others, this is how it is, 99% of these lists are just "did we get any from this in, did we get this type a person in, etc..." As for CHAKA she is that rambling relative at thanksgiving that no one hears from till the holiday dinner.
