I'm not delving into whether Chaka is high or whatever.

She is a legacy artist. And I think any artist of her caliber has to be fearful of perhaps losing sight of her legacy, and people losing sight of her.

The statement she made makes sense - it was a fear response. She knows folks like Adele can sing. But she's also worried that less-than-talented types on the list are being ranked above her. It's mostly a popularity list. And legacy artists aren't that high on those lists anymore.

Hell, if we're being honest, Mariah is becoming a legacy artist. Her voice is rougher now and she ain't hitting those whistle-tones like she did 30 years ago. Or even 20 years ago. So if Chaka takes a pot shot, eh, so be it.

Labeling it a fear response doesn't make it right. It's just more important to understand where she could be coming from, rather than dismissing her as the crazy aunt at the picnic. Her candor is highly entertaining and she doesn't regret one thing she said. She made a statement to appease the public, not because she had a change of heart.

And Joan Baez can't sing that great.

The legacy artists are falling off mainly because alot who are employed at these magazines barely have knowledge about anything before they were born, then someone looks at the list and says OH we better toss in some old timers to make us look like we know history of music, basically they dont. I mean right now all I am hearing about is Hugh Grant and his AWKWARD interview on the oscars, I watched the clip, it wasnt awkward the person interviewing was asking dumb nonsense questions. But thats the times we live in now, lets give everyone an article, a blog, a mic, a platform when most don't have anything to really say. As for RS and their lists, there is a file for them in every restroom in the world.

It's funny you mention that. I almost mentioned how you can tell who works on the lists by who's on the lists. Gen Xers vs Gen Z. You can tell who had an input where.

Sure, except she couldn't fathom that Adele is a better singer than she is. Adele may not have any songs with decades of nostalgia attached like Sweet Thing or You Got The Love, but Chaka can't sing her way out of a paper bag compared to Adele today. And if we're talking prime vs prime, I'd still question it given Adele, breathing techniques aside, can belt just as good as Chaka in her prime

The lady is famous for hot takes. She always has some negative shit to say.

Everyone is welcome to an opinion but I have to roll with RJO on this one. Adele isn't even a blemish on Chaka's ass when it comes to singing. Classic Chaka is damn near as good as it gets. Adele is forgettable as a whitebread cheese sandwich. Picture her trying to breath life into anything of Chaka's ... if your not laughing at the thought you should be.

Chaka hasnt done herself any favors over recent years by giving consistantly sloppy live performances. Again this is my musical mother. Would I pay to see her in concert today? Nope! I think a big part of the problem is her boredom with the material. How many times can she sing Aint Nobody or Im Every Woman without becoming apathetic? The best I have heard her sound recently was a virtual show she did in 2020. She performed several album cuts that she never includes in her normal show and let me tell you that was the best I have heard her sound in over a decade. She appeared more engaged and exhilerated.

I don't know if you heard, but Melle Mel ("The Message") was causing some controversy over some similar Top 50 Rappers list.

The difference is most people respect him so much that they let him say whatever he thinks. I felt much the same about Chaka Khan!
