I can't honestly think of any songs in her catalogue that sound like "Hollywood", "Nothing Fails", "X-Static Process" or "Mother and Father". I think the album is very fresh and exciting.

I agree with you.The songs on this CD may not be "groundbreaking" for Madonna (like the ROL songs were),but they don't sound like anything else on the radio right now.Who else is effectively mixing folk music with electronica? Who else would add a *rap* to an electronica song with a folk-tinged chorus (the title track)? Songs like "Mother And Father","Die Another Day","Easy Ride" and "Nobody Knows Me" sound fresh and unique. It's not your average Top 40 music.

Give yourself a break and stay off the Madonna threads. You're not bringing anything new to the table.

I'm very happy that Madonna has a number 1 album. Even "Ray Of Light" only made it to number 2! If people are a little bit surprised by the low figures, don't be considering how uncommerical this album is compared to "Music" which had a huge hit single! Also, I won't be suprised if Madonna remains at the top spot for two weeks, considering their aren't any really big new releases this week (although it would be crazy and even kind of cool for Kelly Price's new album to take the top spot from Madonna!).

Fair enough. This forum is suppose to be for other artists but the volume of Madonna threads you guys create I just do not understand why not go to Madonna.org or whatever popular fansite that supports Madonna.

That's a very good point you made.'Ray Of Light' debuted at Number Two in the U.S. and it was kept out of the Number One spot by the massive-selling 'Titanic' soundtrack. And yes, this new CD is decidedly less commercial than most of her albums,so it probably won't be a blockbuster and that's just fine with me.I would rather Maddy make the music that SHE wants to make, instead of working with all the "hot" producers and creating an album that sounds like everything else on the radio.

Madonna has another No. 1 album in Canada, but unlike her two previous efforts, the sales figures were not overwhelming.

"American Life" debuted at the top spot on sales of 18,000, barely edging out the soundtrack to the popular Quebec reality show "Star Academie," which sold 17,400, according to data compiled by Nielsen SoundScan.

In comparison, Madonna's previous albums, 2000's "Music" and 1998's "Ray Of Light," both debuted at the top of the charts with sales of 50,300 and 59,900 respectively.

Just don't post then! Madonna, like it or not, has a huge following, as you can see by the vast quantity of threads for her here.

The sales figures were not overwhelming, but still impressive.Considering that the music biz is in a slump (just ask Whitney and Toni Braxton, for example) and when you think about how long Madonna has been in the biz,and the fact that she is 44 YEARS OLD,her sales are actually pretty amazing.Madonna now has the Number One album in *fourteen* different countries...

USA #1
UK #1
Germany #1
France #1
Italy #1
Canada #1
Sweden #1
Austria #1
Switzerland #1
Taiwan #1
Belgium #1
Norway #1
Singapore #1
Europe (overall) #1

And check out her high positions in these other countries...

Spain #2
Denmark #2
Australia #3
Finland #4
Holland #4
Ireland #7

Of course,we know she's not gonna sell records like she did in the 80s,but the fact that a 44-year old married mother of two can place a new CD at the top of the charts,in an industry dominated by young acts and hip-hoppers,well,that is astonishing.

David, do you talk just to listen to yourself? No disrespect but you do NOT have to be a young act or hip hopper to have chart success. Today's Top 25 sales or chart status has Cher, Fleetwood Mac, James Taylor, John Hiatt, Richard Thompson, Jimmy Buffet, Dixie Chicks, even Celine Dion, Tony Bennett and Rod Stewart.

Now James Taylor still ruling the charts is Astonishing, not Madonna ruling the charts. Madonna should rule the charts automatically like Tom Cruise opens a movie. It should be a given not an astonishment

Yes,there are *some* older artists and bands that do manage to occasionally top the charts, but for the most part, the industry is ruled by younger artists.Look at this week's Top 10 charts (albums)...

Madonna 'American Life'
50 Cent 'Get Rich Or Die Trying'
Kelly Clarkson 'Thankful'
Linkin Park 'Meteora'
Cher 'The Very Best Of'
Norah Jones 'Come Away With Me'
Evanescense 'Fallen'
Fleetwood Mac 'Say You Will'
Various Artists 'Now 12'
50 Cent 'The New Breed'

And check out the national airplay chart (from Billboard). These are the songs that are getting played on the radio the most...

Sean Paul "Get Busy"
50 Cent "In Da Club"
R.Kelly "Ignition"
50 Cent with Nate Dogg "21 Questions"
Fabolous "Can't Let You Go"
Busta Rhymes "I Know What You Want"
Justin Timberlake "Rock Your Body"
3 Doors Down "When I'm Gone"
Snoop Dogg "Beautiful"
Evanescence "Bring Me To Life"

As you can see, there aren't too many older artists on either of those charts. And you almost *never* see any old artists on MTV or TRL,do you? I'm just saying that,in today's youth-dominated, competitive music scene,it's an achievement for Madonna to still be going strong. With the way the music biz works, she should have been "over" 10 years ago.

"Madonna should rule the charts automatically just like Tom Cruise opens a movie"

There are no guarantees in the music world.Just ask Whitney Houston or Mariah Carey (two artists whose recent albums should also be ruling the charts "automatically").

The funny thing about "Just Whitney" is that it did very well on its first week (I think it had better numbers than "Mu Love is Your Love") but it didn't have any legs becuase the song was a flop (I don't know why, its a good song). That's going to be a problem for Madonna as well, since the title track really is a dissapointment on the charts (partailly becuase American radio is scared to play anything that might upset Georgie).
