Another Number One album for Madonna....Congratulations,Maddy!

To nobody's surprise,Madonna's new CD 'American Life' will debut at the Number One position on the Billboard charts. In the U.S.,it sold over 240,000 copies in it's first week.In addition, the album is also Number One in at least 10 other countries...

France
Italy
Norway
U.K.
Germany
Brazil
Lebanon
Korea
Switzerland
Mexico

These record sales are very impressive, especially considering that Madonna has been in the business for over 20 years.Critics like to say that she is no longer "relevent" but obviously, her strong record sales prove otherwise.

So how many cd's do you think you need to sell in Lebanon to be number one? I'm guessing maybe a thousand big grin.

I'm still grooving to my copy since its release last week...

I think "Hollywood" should be the next single...it has the perfect summer driving around LA kinda of vibe...a nice road trip from Silverlake (where I live) via Sunset Blvd. down to Malibu and then on to Venice Beach...

2 bad people are gonna b higly upset after tha album is over. As it includes the same ol sounding tired stuff she pulled on Music...and I thought Music was much more entertaining. The artwork is cool though. Other than "Nobody Knows Me" "Die Another Day" & "American Life" the album falls flat.

no way man. i always thought this chick was such a joke until i heard "promise to try". been a fan ever since.

like P i dont much care for their singles but more the album tracks that get me.

i cant stand alot of her radio songs. but songs like
"nothing fails" are where her best comes out.

i like it more everytime i hear it.

240,000 is a decent number to sell, but it comes WAY short of the figures for "Music" and "Ray of Light" for first week sales. The "American Life" single is tanking too, as I expected. "Hollywood" should come soon and rescue the album from obscurity.

Well, the album has people talking, that's for sure. How many threads are in this forum alone that are dedicated to Maddy?

I thought I read somewhere that Ray of Light and Music were right around this figure. Somewhere in the 200 thousand range. Am I wrong? Was the source wrong? I think I read this on Madonnarama.

Yes,"Hollywood" will be the next single.Madonna will start filming the video the last week of May.It is rumored that a major celebrity (possibly Julia Roberts) will appear in the video.

Yeah, but you have to understand that record sales are down for EVERYBODY these days, largely because of file-sharing.The music business is in a serious slump.Unless you're somebody like Eminem, you're not really gonna sell too much more than what Maddy sold in her first week.I think her record sales are highly impressive considering how long she's been around.Look at all the artists who were "hot" when she first started (Lionel Ritchie,Hall and Oates,Cyndi Lauper, etc),where are they now? Do you see them selling huge amounts of CDs and debuting at Number One?

Yes, Springsteen and Michael Jackson both 80's icons, debut impressively with their latest cds, both within the past two years. And had good 2-3 week sales figures. Only one was Grammy worthly, the other had two radio cuts. You are only good as your last release.

File sharing was just as prevalent around the time of "Music," but that still managed 420,000 in its first week! I hope she proves me wrong, but I get a bad feeling about this one. I love the album a lot, but I feel that radio isn't going to like much of it.

Somehow I think that Madonna isn't too concerned with this. She hasn't been in 'pop' mode for nearly a decade now.

This new CD isn't very commercial (I consider it more "artistic" than "radio friendly") so I don't think it will be one of her biggest selling albums. But that's okay.Madonna has had tremendous success in the past, every album can't be a blockbuster. But I still think this CD will do well, especially when "Nothing Fails" is released as a single. The fans love that song, and it has alot of hit potential.

I agree. I just hope the album doesn't lose momentum like "Music" did. I'd like to see "Hollywood," "Nothing Fails" and "Mother and Father" get the recognition they deserve! It's too bad she chose the worst song of the album as the first single.

And TRON,you are absolutely right.I don't think Madonna is too concerend these days with making every song/album a "hit".She's doing alot of experimenting these days and the new CD isn't very radio friendly (except for a few songs). And I love her all the more for it.

I wanted to wait until I was fully familiar with the album to give it a proper review, but at this point, I like it a lot. It's a lot more consistent than "Music." I just wish she would have ditched the title track and called it "Hollywood" instead. wink All the other songs are great. "Mother and Father" is really touching to me and is my favorite, followed closely by "Nothing Fails," "Hollywood," "Die Another Day" and "Easy Ride." "Nobody Knows Me" seemed like a rip off of "Impressive Instant" at first, but I have grown to love it too. The only other song that I don't quite get yet is "Love Profusion." I'm sure with time I'll appreciate it more. 10 out of 11 winners isn't bad! I'm glad my fears were unfounded because the title track REALLY worried me about this album.

The only song on the album that I don't really like is "I'm So Stupid".Musically,it sounds okay but her vocals are annoying on this track, and the lyrics aren't that great, either. My current favorite song is "X-Static Process",that song is freakin' brilliant!! It's not often that we get to hear Maddy do a "stripped down" song like that. Her vocals are amazing on that song.Kinda makes me wish she would do an "Unplugged" performance.

I really like "I'm So Stupid." It seems like the "Candy Perfume Girl" of the album- very rockish and jarring. The opening "III" part is definitely jolting, but I think it serves a purpose. I love "X-Static Process" too. Lots of the songs feature that baby voice in the same vein as Debbie Harry. I love it! In "Hollywood" it seems to serve the purpose of reporting the cliche of what Hollywood is about, whereas her normal singing voice is reserved for her own experiences.

"Mother and Father" is probably top 10 Madonna songs of all time for me. I really adore it. "Nothing Fails" is a brilliant, brilliant song as well. I've been listening to this album non-stop since it came out, ecstatic and relieved that I actually like it!

I'm glad you like it because I just knew that you were going to hate it...lol...as for "I'm So Stupid",when I first heard that opening "iii" part,I was wondering if maybe her vocoder machine broke down while they were recording it...lol...

"Mother And Father" is a great song indeed.I'm surprised at how personal and candid Madonna is on this CD.She doesn't seem to be holding anything back.

240,000 is a decent number to sell, but it comes WAY short of the figures for "Music" and "Ray of Light" for first week sales. The "American Life" single is tanking too, as I expected. "Hollywood" should come soon and rescue the album from obscurity.

File sharing was just as prevalent around the time of "Music," but that still managed 420,000 in its first week! I hope she proves me wrong, but I get a bad feeling about this one. I love the album a lot, but I feel that radio isn't going to like much of it.

I haven't seen your review of the CD smile

What do you think of it overall? I like it better than 'Music'.

The only other song that I don't quite get yet is "Love Profusion." My only critique of the album (other than the title track) is that it doesn't break any new ground musically. The songs are solid, cohesive works, but they borrow a lot from earlier experiments. That said, though, I really love it. It's probably my fourth favorite Madonna album, behind "Like a Prayer," "Ray of Light" and "Madonna." It's growing on me with each listen as well.

As much as I love the album,I really hope that Maddy doesn't work with Mirwais again.Don't get me wrong,I really like him and I think he's very talented. But I just feel like, after 'Music',the 'DAD' single, and now this new CD,there really isn't any more interesting directions that he could take Madonna in.The folk/electronica sound of this CD is intriguing though and it doesn't really sound like nothing else in the Top 40 right now.

I completely agree- it's time to move on after this CD is over and done. She's treading water rather than swimming ahead. I love it though!

I don't agree. I don't think she's treading water at all. Of course it sounds like Mirwais, but I think this album is a completely different take on their sound together. And a refinement as well. She probably has taken it as far as it can go with this album, but I think the sound and content is very surprising. People weren't saying that Bowie should move on when he worked with Eno again on "Heroes". Imagine if Prince had dumped the Revolution after "Purple Rain". I'm glad that she worked with only one producer on this album and that it's Mirwais. I think it holds together better than any Madonna album other than the first one and "Ray Of Light". I can't honestly think of any songs in her catelogue that sound like "Hollywood", "Nothing Fails", "X-Static Process" or "Mother and Father". I think the album is very fresh and exciting.
