Rolling Stones' Top 100 Songs of 1982! Some good stuff on there.

So Rolling Stone considers "The Message" to be the best song of 1982 but the article uses an image of Grandmaster Flash and the "Furious Five" that doesn't include the only member that's on the actual record?

I can't believe "Gloria" by Laura Branigan isn't on the list. It should easily be top twenty.

Agreed | |

Give them credit - they voted this incredible song as Numero Uno - instead of some [b[[color-red][Snip -luv4u][/color][/b] rock song

I mean some good songs on there but please, as soon as I Click on the link and see Toto "AFRICA" is number 100, I know this list is going to be laughable, and some of these choices are, also I agree about the omission of Laura Brannigan, I mean come on one of the biggest songs of the year and still huge today, same goes for TOTO that song has had more life than most on this list. Also people may disagree and maybe its not RS cup of tea but did I miss Air Supply on here? I know we think that isn't music or RS doesn't think they are but please one of the biggest duos in that short time period as we went from Disco to New Wave.

i was 10 in 82. Me watching MTV in 1982: MJ, "wow!" Prince, "Wow!" . then, MJ "Thriller" video "WOOOWWW!!!" . then, "When Doves Cry" "Whaaaa???!!!" . then, 'Purple Rain' "Whatever skin we're in
we all need 2 b friends" | |

Songs I also don't recall seeing on the list: > "Physical" by Olivia Nerwton John > "Chariots of Fire: by Vangelis > " I Ran" by Flock of Seagulls > "Always On My Mind" by Willie Nelson > "Don't Stop Believin'" by Journey > "Working For The Weekend" by Loverboy > "Edge of Seventeen" by Stevie Nicks > And Nothing from Air Supply

This is a farce. "Whatever skin we're in

It's like they added some cool stuff in place of the sure things.

Air Supply, really? I mean, I love me some cheese, but that stuff is mostly rancid. Gloria ain't much better. (It's shrill.) I prefer Brannigan's Self Control.

I totally agree I love me some soft rock but Air Supply puts me to sleep.
and "Gloria" is an annoying song.I much prefer the sexy "Self Control",her finest single imo.

Also as always RS is trying to seem hip or knowledgeable, putting REM number four a track off chronic town which just got a proper rerelease, and it's not that great an rem track it's ok but it's here because all of a sudden there is focus on that release.

Some of those songs maybe on a 1981 list instead

Critics have to throw some obscure shit in there. It does make me curious about the songs I haven't heard, tho.

You're right. No wonder they're not on the list! I was looking at Billboards Top Songs of 1982, which of course has a haphazard timeline.

True. I went searching for songs I wasn't familiar with, of note the Bruce Springsteen song.

This list proves that 1982 was a pretty bad year for new music

Please. Better than any of the music of the last 22 years.

Yeah to each their own. But I think there was a lot of great albums released in 1982 such as Thriller, Rio, 1999, American Fool, H2O to name a few. But anyone can come up with a list. You get a 100 people to make a list of the top 100 songs of 1982 and you will get a 100 different lists. I'm sure some of the lists you would agree with and others you won't.

There was alot of great R&B/funk music released in 1982.The Gap Band released their strongest album 'IV'....Cameo released 'Alligator Woman'....even War made a great comeback with their 'Outlaw' album.Later that year,Prince put out his best album '1999' and let's not forget The Time's 'What Time Is It'.

You took the words out of my mouth. It was a hell of a year for R&B. My favorite year for R&B in the 80's hands down. Just add to your list Rick James released Throwin Down that year, the Barkays released Propositions, Zapp II came out that year, Evelyn Champagne Kings Get Loose was released that year and the Dazz Band's breakthrough album Keep It Live. As far as Rolling Stones list go it's all subjective. I couldn't name one song by Laura Branigan but did remember her name once someone brought her up. Don't laugh at my funk

Did anyone see the picture of the Gap Band? That had to between 1972-1976 You Dropped The Bomb On Me was number 30 on the list. Not bad. I have a question out of curiosity. Did anyone notice whether a Jody Watley solo song was on this list? I didn't see the whole list but it's possible. I did notice Shalamar's A Night To Remember was number 72. I notice her die hard fans and even her on the internet like to boast about her solo career being larger than Shalamar or whatever but I'm like chill baby girl ain't nobody checking for them songs at the cookout if even at all now. A Night To Remember, Second Time Around, and Make That Move are always gonna get more love from black radio and the cookout than any of your solo records. Don't laugh at my funk
This funk is a serious joint

I also remember that Luther Vandross released his second album 'Forever,For Always,For Love' in 1982.Also,my favorite SOS Band hit ("High Hopes") came out in '82 So many exciting things going on in the R&B world in '82.

Most of these listmakers are. 20 years ago their "Top" whatever lists were comprised Beatles, Beatles, more Beatles and subsequent Beatles solo records. now every list in 2022 suddenly discovered existence of black art... Guess it's better late than never, but the public should never forget these publications are all fakin' the funk. [Edited 10/28/22 4:42am]
