You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

"Together Forever" is a better song than "Never Gonna Give You Up."

He's British, so his music hit better over there in the long term.

The best part of it is that he's had the longevity of career due to him not taking himself that seriously. He gets the humor of it all.

He's on the Mixtape Tour right now with NKOTB, En Vogue, and Salt n' Pepa. And the show is truly a mix tape, the artists sharing stage time, each one peppered throughout the show. Donnie Wahlburg raps on "Shoop," En Vogue comes out for "Whatta Man" but a lot of their vocals for that song are backtracked. NKOTB go from "The Right Stuff" and the beat continues as Salt n' Pepa comes out to do a song and NKOTB leaves the stage for a bit. It looks like a fun show. Rick has his moments in there, too.

Rick has even gotten props from Foo Fighters, who played a rock version of "Never Gonna" with Rick singing the lead. Kylie Minogue has had him on stage for a medley of her song and his.

Rick seems to have stayed grounded throughout the years, and has just had a good time through it all.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

No way Jose. Not sure which one the team wrote first, but thats like saying "ABC" is better than "I want you back". Thats the best comparison this song willl ever get LOL. Not deserved either.

"The Love You Save" is better than both of those.

I never got the one hit wonder term, its one I hate because its really a term that is always used in America and mostly wrong. Rick had two number one and five top tens, but its america where radio tends to get stuck on one song even if you have more. Rick Springfield is called a one hit wonder and he had 18 top 40 hits and four platunum and gold albums in a row, he was peaked "commercially" in a time that had the beginning of Madonna and Prince and MJ. Corey Hart gets lumped into that shit term but even the ONE HIT is not his biggest hit, thats why I put no weight on that, its not like Rick had one single and never recorded again and sold nowhere.

Good points.

And most times, real one-hit wonders just fade away. Rick's always been around. Always. Corey Hart sorta retreated back to Canada and retained his home-country audience. Peopel think of him with "Sunglasses at Night," but "Never Surrender" was a much bigger hit in the U.S. and Canada. He continued to release singles and chart with them (even reaching #2 again later in his career).

So yeah, I think Americans lose sight of the fact that there is a music scene beyond their local Record Town or Sam Goody. There's another whole fucking side of the planet, and more, that buy music and support acts. Minogue is such a good example, too, of course. "Locomotion" then nothing until "Can't Get You Out Of My Head," labeled as a "comeback." The bitch never left! And good on her, and Rick, and Corey.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Yeah Kylie is a huge example good point, Simple Minds also another, people forget that they had a few more top 10 hits right after Dont You, and a few top 40 singles and to this day are still touring and releasing new music that charts almost everywhere else. a-ha is a prime example too, though always known for take on me and granted it was number one in 24 countries, but they didnt stop they had 17 straight UK top 40 hits and in MANY countries "sun always shines on TV" and "The Living Daylights" are bigger than Take on Me. And they also releases new music to this day including more this year and just played sold out gigs in NYC 6,000 seats

I think it's safe to say that people know Simple Minds well beyond "Don't Forget About Me." I personally love "Sanctify Yourself" and "Alive and Kicking" tons more. "All The Things She Said" is also a stellar song.

I do love "Don't You," because of his HEY HEY HEY HEEYYY, but then dives into a deep voice on the verse, then comes back up to a higher range on the chorus. It's subtle verbal acrobatics, but highly effective.

A-Ha's "The Sun Always Shines" is a very good song, and I wish more people remembered it more.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Well since the keyboard hook to "Take on Me" is being plundered to death, maybe artists will move on the "Sun...".

I love Rick's music. He doesn't take himself too seriously, but he also seems to love what he does, he still sounds great live, and he has embraced his SAW-era hits.

But it's true, he is not a one-hit wonder. Never Gonna Give You Up, Together Forever, She Wants to Dance With Me and A Cry for Help were all bit hits, among others. He also did a cover of Nat King Cole's When I Fall in Love.

I don't like the term "one-hit wonder". It seems a bit dismissive, and many artists have different chart hits in different territories.

Kylie Minogue actually had three Top 40 songs from her debut album, I Should Be So Lucky, The Loco-motion and It's No Secret. Geffen issued It's Not Secret as a single in America, and it was hardly released anywhere else in the world but it still managed to scrape the bottom of the top 40.

I can also vouch that, as a Canadian, Corey Hart still had a few hits into the late '80s. He did a cover of Elvis' I Can't Help Falling in Love in 1986 which was a big hit here in Canada, a few years before the UB40 cover.

As keyboard play Magne Furuholmen said (he wrote the riff when he was about 13) that song has worked its balls off for us. a-ha is smart with their money and fame, their success has been in pockets all over, america early, the UK for longer and then on and off, Germany, Norway of course, but South America these guys are almost royality. So I get the dismissive american term of ONE HIT WONDER on them since the song is so big in america more than anything most have ever heard of them, BUT reality is you dont last 40 years playing to 80,000 people in south america and 20,000 in the UK and all other markets and even selling out the few american dates if you just had ONE song and never had something else to work off of, I mean to lump them in with others that dropped off the face of the earth is insasnity.

The only one I've heard is on a song by Pitbull called Feel This Moment. I don't remember any others

To my knowledge there just have been a few covers, usually evoking the slow version of it, reality is everyone thinks its this poppy go lucky song, its not. Lyrically the band has always been dark its just when you have one of the best smoothest effortless voices fronting the band it tends to not send dark
