Janet at Essence Fest 2022

.

It was a fun set, Janet seemed to be enjoying herself and actually singing for most of the performance. She looked great all shiny and sparkly. I liked the few subtle shoutouts to the late Luther Vandross, MJ, and Heavy D.

I thought it was great. The sound, as usual, wasn't that great on the feed. My friend was there and said it was fantastic in person. You couldn't hear the audience on the feed. It's like it went silent, but she said the crowd was definitely up and active.

The set was shorter than I expected, only 75-minutes, but still super fun. I was happy to hear her down "So Much Betta," and "Funny How Time Flies." I also loved the different arrangement for the verse of "What Have You Done For Me Lately."

There is a part in "Feedback" that she started using in the Vegas residency. When she sings, "Before we go anymore futher...", there's this fat synth hit they do on every syllable of the lyrics. It's so full and rich. I wish they were more in the song as a whole.

I was live tweeting the show. I have a gal I know on Twitter. We've been Twitter buddies forever. She said, "I came to your TL to see if you were watching and I love that you were live tweeting it! I wish I had signal in the stadium because I literally had some of these same reactions!"

I do think she lost audio at one point in the show. She seemed to struggle to hear, and ended up with a handheld mic for a couple of songs. She carried on like a professional, though.

Janet performed a day or two before at the Kentucky Derby. She and the dancers wore traffic cone orange outfits, which hats reminiscent of The Velvet Rope Tour. I've not found the whole show yet.

She was cute. The sound was horrible. We had tix to see her as the pandemic hit. Hoping we get another chance.

Great show. I love the live vocals. Hope we get a Black Diamond album and tour in the Fall.
