We Need To Talk About Vince and Paul When Motley Crue toured The End, I watched endless videos. And I noticed something - Vince Neil was the fuck out of breath. He wasn't singing. He was grunting through the songs.
As an example, during "Same Ol' Situation," instead of "all around the world, girls will be girls..." it was "ahhh 'rooon ah wooorrr...."
On their recent The Stadium Tour, it's not much better. Vince is less overweight than he was the last time, but he's still letting the audience do a lot of the singing, and he's mostly winging his vocals. Long gone are the days of him hitting a high note. And while I get people switching up the melody, maybe going lower because a note is just too high, and there are just too many miles on the throat, there still has to be something.
Mick Mars hinted a few years ago about there being backing tracks. And frankly, I believe him. There's no way those four guys, in their fifties and sixties, are making those sort of strong and layered harmonies in a live setting. No fucking way.
Honestly, Vince looks tired and disinterested the moment he comes out, much less trying to stay up there for two hours. The guy is out of breath, and out of talent.
I love Motley Crue. But fucking hell. Stop already.
The worse offender: KISS. In 2019, there was multiple videos on Paul's lip syncing. The In-Ear Monitor with click tracks (which isn't the worst thing in the world), fake vocals, and stage cues are on YouTube for the full shows. You can clearly hear Paul's pre-recorded vocals (or ones taken from a previous tour where his voice didn't suck) versus when he comes in live and is just like a dog shitting on an 8-track. It's bad.
But now, on the final leg of the final tour of the final time or whatthefinalever, it's worse. TheFonz, on youTube (who had the IEM videos), uploaded a recent video from Antwerp with a bad opening moment w/ Paul not even facing the mic, looking confused, and yet we hear his voice. His lips weren't even moving. Part of that story is that Eric messed up by two measures, so the band was off compared to Paul's pre-recorded vocals. Paul looks befuddled through the whole song.
Gene is caught lip syncing too. Previous videos by other users shows Gene singing live in every song. But now during his "God of Thunder" shtick, he's moving his head away from the mic, yet S and CH, etc sounds are clearly heard. Other examples are shown, too. Kiss has even lip synced on their Kiss Kruise and on late night talk shows.
The should've called the tour End of the Voice.
So should these bands have just bowed out before now, done something else separately, maybe just put out a record every 5 years or something to appease the audience, rather than all this shitty voice stuff? Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking. |
