The soundtrack was a big hit though. Not only was "Separate Lives" in it, but Lionel Richie's "Say You, Say Me" was not, yet was still promoted with the movie. In subsequent printings, it was included as a bonus track.

I never dug "Separate LIves' back then, but I enjoy it now. I was obsessed with "Say You, Say Me" because it was just so unusual with the tempo changes, etc.

I'm sorta surprised at all the names on the soundtrack. Good names, and I never knew any of these songs existed (except "I Don't Wanna Know" which was on Collins' No Jacket Required album; an album with arguably no bad songs on it).

Yeah at that point Phil was not in good standing with the Oscars so he was surely not going to get the votes, surprised he got the nod at that time. He was upset, and rightly so for when he was nominated for "Against All Odds" and he was told that NO artists were singing their songs which was a lie, because Denice Williams and ray Parker both performed and were asked to perform as was Stevie Wonder who declined, only Phil and Kenny Loggins were not asked to be on the show, think how that would go over in todays twitter world. But the fact all those great songs were in that class, shows that movies and soundtracks suck now

Soundtrack is not as good as maybe it oughta be considering the year, artists and producers on it.

Of course, Mr Richie is missing (thanks Motown LOL). But, like all those 80's and 90's soundtracks, a gem is often found. In this case its obscuro "People have got to move" by Jenny Burton. Nile Rodgers was so on it back then. He has had his re-evaluation in UK but his mid-late 80's work is still overlooked a wee bit.

David Pack goes all Frank Stallone and its good if you like that 80's cheese like I do.

David Foster's contribution is gimmicky but I loved this period from him so I give it a pass.

Movie used most of the songs from what I remember? "Say you, say me" was defo in the climax. Imagine the surprise when movie goers come out of just watching the movie, inpulse buy the OST and find no "Say you say me" LOL

"Against All Odds" came on my 80s channel today. I sorta tuned in and listened closer.

Phil sang the shit out of that song, and it was never high on my list of Phil songs. But I've always had a huge appreciation for his songwriting and producing abilities. People have really ragged on him for whatever reason, and I just don't get it.

If folks wanna throw out words like cheesy, schmaltz, etc., well welcome to the 80s. Phil was no different, really. But I do think it's more intense musical background with a group like Genesis really aided him in having a grip on my musical landscape that many famous folks in the 80s didn't.

No Jacket Required is still one of his best records, if not the best. There's not a bad song on it. Even local TV stations back home were using the intros to some of those songs for local TV shows.

It was the ability to write a good song and he had the knack for it, as did Lionel Richie, yes it was the era to have the classic ballad, but you also had to know how to write it and sing it too. Today for the most part all of things are just too in your face, no sublte appproaches with songwriting, everything seems to be about he or she cheated and get even with them etc... same styles progressions and vocals, and for the most part the songs are not really crafted that well because now artists are making them even shorter, they know a four minute song is not going to get you to stream more than a two and half minute song thats to the point, attention span is not a trait of these times at all, thats why you have very little growth in artists.

I like that you threw Lionel Richie in there. I think people take for granted that he's a great songwriter. We know he is, but we so rarely really sit and appreciate it.

And I know folks love Can't Slow Down, but it's Dancing on the Ceiling that I love, with its bonus track "Night Train (Smooth Alligator)." Maybe I'll have a few minutes and start a thread on him soon.

"Dancing on the ceiling", as an album, is a wee bit too short. I had no idea that the LP had a few shorter edits on songs like Dire Straits "Brothers in arms" did. They coulda included them on the reissue ugh.

I too really like "Night train". Iam a big fan of Narada from that era and the song is mostly him LOL. I think Lionel's usual producer was on it but Narada was too I think? All giddy,glossy mid 80's goodness

Yeah, it's a big, synthy, overdone song, but it's yummy.

I actually compiled a longer version of the album, using the 12" versions of songs like "Se La," (8:12) "Love Will Conquer All" (7 minutes), and "Don't Stop" (9 minutes), but left the title track as the album version. It just stretches it out a bit overall.

Because of folks from Pride are listed as the composers of "Night Train," Sade is part of those credits.

I read 'Phil Collins & Marilyn Manson' when I clicked on this thread. Now I am disappointed, LOL!
